Part of the duty of the military is to imagine the unimaginable and even plan for it. Who could have predicted with accuracy Pearl Harbor and WWII with enough lead time to prevent the loss of the Philippines and other US possessions?

Just because it is unlikely, unimaginable, or even unthinkable, does not mean it can't happen.
