I was just reading that this was one of the first battles with the new 6 company infantry battalions. The wikipedia annotation for the 1st and 2d divisions of II corps notes that the center companies of these divisions were mostly new recruits, with the flank companies made up of veterans. Does anyone have a good estimate of the quality of these mixed units? Would it be more accurate to describe them as less experienced or more experienced? In the crudest terms, if veterans are a 6, and conscripts a 4, would these battalions be 5s? Also, were the flank companies of the light battalions in both 1st and 2d Div of II Corps also a mix of vets and new recruits, and if so, were the vets only drawn from the light regiments, or were troops (maybe light infantry?) from line battalions transferred to provide the light regiments flank companies? Or were men from the 1st-3rd battalions recalled from Spain to do this? Thanks! |

The question is: how would you value the usual french line infantry? Are they a 5 or a 6? IMO the II. Corp should be rated conscript at the beginning of the campaign, i.e. in Bavaria. At Wagram they had so much experienced, that i dont see much difference to regulkar line infantry. |
