Watching "Battle of Five Armies" again got me thinking, who would win in a fight between Smaug and Drogon? Then I added others, so who's your favorite in combat?

Smaug
Drogon
Balerion the Black Dread
Ancalagon the Black
Apep
Beowulf's dragon
Coatlcue
The Deerhurst Dragon
Fafnir
King Ghidorah
The Ladon Dragon
Tiamat (D&D version)
The Wantley Dragon
Zu

Your ideas?

Winston Smith04 Sep 2017 11:36 a.m. PST

George RR Martin says Smaug would beat Drogon, easy.

Smaug is ancient and crafty. Darn big too.
Any Game of Thrones types are adolescents, yoots. They don't live long. Cute, though.

No D&D dragons! We should only be discussing REAL ones! grin

Mardaddy04 Sep 2017 11:48 a.m. PST

Depends on which version of Tiamat.

What about Vermithrax from Dragon Slayer? Or Jormungandr? As a Godzilla nut I'd have to vote for King Ghidora. Unless you're talking about Tiamat from Babylonian mythos, in which case I'd go with her.

Leviathan!
Yeveaud
Lockheed (Kitty's Fairy Tale)
My Mother-in-Law
Mushu (Mulan)
Quetzlcoatl
A Plague of Butterflies
"Baby, you come knockin' on my front door …"*
Dixie (mind swapped with Growf)
The Conqueror Worm (kinda in the title, innit?)

But my personal pick … The Jose Cuervo Wyrm!

with Dragon Tales a close second, as it would highly likely defeat any other candidate by making them wretch to death.

* – I used this in D&D once.

Puff? He is magic.

But none of the others have Fafnir's singing voice.

Thinking of which, does Adzel from the Poul Anderson stories count? Not powerful, but with serious friends.

Don't forget Tremeraire!
Or the dragons from Pern.

But Smaug beats the newcomers from Westeros, hands down.

Vermithrax pejorative

Bob Runnicles05 Sep 2017 6:14 a.m. PST

Another vote for Vermithrax here, but between Smaug and Drogon you have to go with Smaug.

Crazyivanov10 Sep 2017 11:32 a.m. PST

Are people only not voting for the obvious choice because they never read the Silmarillion? Because if a list has Ancalagon the Black on it, there really aren't any other correct choices.

This one.
