First posting failed!!

I've been having a bit of a summer if boardgaming and this week saw us try out a couple of contrasting WW2 Board games. Drop by and have a look…

ASL is so appealing as the king of WW2 tactical combat, but I shiver at the thought of actually playing those rules.

ASL… blast from the past!
I have fond memories of the original AH SL game… then the "upgrade" to ASL came, and it became unplayable. Definitely a relic from the 1980s, with its absurd acronyms and suffocating rules.

"Definitely a relic from the 1980s…….". And yet every year at Enfilade a dedicated group of gamers come to play only ASL. I'm not one of them, but to them the game is quite current.

ASL is a blast from the past that keeps on blasting. It is still being printed and constantly sells out each time a module is released. Even though I play the game more than any other I do agree that the rules are a bit top heavy.

OH – and unlike some miniatures games the rules from the eighties have not had many changes at all, it is still on it's second version and the changes from the first printing are minor and have more to do with cleaning up some errors than changes. There are people playing with the first edition rules still and they can play against most people with second edition rules, bocage being the major changes in wording.

Life is too short for ASL.

Get two players, both with a thorough understanding of the rules they're going to need tonight … I've never had a richer wargaming experience. Got a question? It's in the rulebook, somewhere.

I enjoyed ASL more than I expected although I suspect the full rules might give me a headache!

Enjoyed SL a lot. Then a break for several years and started playing ASL and also enjoyed it.

I did find, however, that I no longer seemed able to absorb all the rules anymore, and there were so very, very many.
