"So here we go. The finale of season seven. And (bleep), hold onto your butts.

Looking out onto a field of Unsullied soldiers has to be disconcerting. Knowing they have dragons as back up? Even more so. This is Daenerys showing her power to the Lannisters in a way that no one can ignore, and in a manner that's much more direct than attacking a single convoy. There are few ways more impressive to make an entrance than on the back of a dragon, even if you are down to two of them.

There are no better sights on this show than Cersei looking disconcerted, by the way.

It remains strange to see all these characters in one place at the same time, but that's kind of the whole point. The game has been going on long enough. Now it's time to see what the score really is.

The wight is revealed after some (admittedly satisfying) conversation, and here we get to see if Tyrion's idiotic plan will improve the situation. That reveal, and the precise length of the chain, is a pretty good payoff for a silly series of action scenes, at least.

The undead soldier is terrifying, and the Hound hacking off bits that still move was a nice touch. Qyburn was interested, at least. Jon's science experiment in front of the class was another nice touch. For a moment at least, he was Billy Nye the Science Bastard.

Euron's sudden departure seems to change the math of things, and Cersei doesn't mess around. She accepts the truce then and there. No one can quite believe it was that easy, but the appeal to Jon's honor — while naming him Ned Stark's son — is a nice bit of thinking on her feet. And yet he turns her down flat. This episode does not mess around: Jon has already bent the knee. The math, once again, changes.

Jon's speech about lies being a bad idea is laudable, but that kind of earnest, naïve thinking is indeed what got his father killed. Daenerys' argument that her dragon might have died for nothing is a telling moment: She has too much invested in the meeting to be able to walk away, even if that's what the situation calls for. It's a bad position to be in, and a worse one to announce, even to your allies…"

We also got the final confirmation that Jon is indeed the Targaryan heir to the throne.

As for Jon's speech, he is proven right since Cersei was lying all along, had no plans to honour a truce and had already bought reinforcements for her army with Euron's apparent abandonment being simply a ploy to cover his absence while he brings in those reinforcements.

Much more spending on CGI needed with 20,000 Golden company coming and all their elephants ….

Winston Smith28 Aug 2017 4:32 a.m. PST

How about some cgi spending on the direwolves?

Having Littlefinger grovel on his knees was a nice touch. He needed killin'

I think Jaime sensed that more Valyrian steel was needed up north. There are a few in the books, but I think all the ones in the show are headed where they're needed. Can Dawn be considered one?

Was Rose on the set to supervise the placement of Kit's sock?

Good think Bran was trippin', so we know the Wall comes down in Real Time.

In the name of the Old Gods and the New, Bran and Sam please don't tell Aegon/Jon the truth. He's got a good thing going!
Maybe when he's 90 and has purged his system of silly notions like "honor", which is a mere sigil.

I was looking through the background info and it seems the name of his son from his first marriage was also called Aegon.

So Rhaegar named both of his sons Aegon?

Thankfully they finally killed that scheming SOB Littlefinger….although it was a better death than he deserved.

Should have sent Littlefinger fleeing from Winterfell and running into the Dire Wolf where he becomes a tasty snack.

What good are Dothraki against castle walls?

The time leaps are grating. Sam gets to Winterfell overnight while an undead army marches, without need of rest or provisions, and only now gets to the Wall?

@ Earl – wasn't it Aeron?

Tango0128 Aug 2017 12:12 p.m. PST

Shortcuts… they are the new way to short cut a long tale… (smile)

Do you not remember the conversation of the first Season with King Barateon about them?… the problem is not to take the castle walls… the problem is that the troops could never left them to search for food, etc…

They all died there after a looong siege….

@ Flashman – Nope, at least both wiki have the name of his first son as being Aegon.

Also found this….

So yeah, both of Rhaegar's sons were apparently named Aegon for some unknown reason, or everyone at GoT missed the fact that the name had already been mentioned in earlier episodes for the other boy when they came up with his Targayen name.

>Sam gets to Winterfell overnight

Hardly – he left two episodes prior, we had that whole 'adventure north of the wall' while Sam was travelling. But I agree the elastic travel time has been by far the most annoying thing about an otherwise great season.

When it became clear it was little fingers trail, I was talking to my self, kill him, don't send him to the dungeon, he'll only weasel his way out.
