Dear Leon,

I enjoy your posts and I also like to see your new sculpts.

1. It's not your fault Leon, it's the website.

2. Where will you post your news now, and please don't say Facebook etc.?

Why are you posting on the forums instead of submitting Hobby News stories?

boy wundyr x25 Aug 2017 7:15 a.m. PST

Forum posts are easier to search. I'll never find a Hobby News posting in two years, but as long as the subject header isn't too obtuse, there's a chance I can find a regular post about something again when I need it.

LeonAdler Sponsoring Member of TMP25 Aug 2017 7:34 a.m. PST

I have put in a news posting but they get cycled so fast very easy to miss. At least here they stay around for a good while.

Facebook? Whats that then? lol Nope never been on it, never will.
Ghastly place and as for the guys who run it…………..well all one can say is that the gene pool needs attention lol

Hi Leon.

I never read the hobby news.
I enjoy your threads and think you should continue posting here.
The publicity can't hurt sales.

I don't follow why "the bug" hasn't been fixed.
Or even why it exists in the first place.
Is time of post used as a unique id?
Generating an incremental unique id for a httppost isn't exactly high end system design.

donlowry25 Aug 2017 9:06 a.m. PST

I didn't know there was a hobby news section!

"Why are you posting on the forums instead of submitting Hobby News stories?"

I have been a member of TMP for many years now and have never seen the Hobby News Stories , In which case I would never have been made aware of Leons wonderful new Late War British infantry models. Does it really matter where it's posted as long as members can see it and get some benefit from the news. Some of these protocols are just a bit tedious if you ask me and its putting a lot of people off using the forum at all.

Sadly, the Hobby News is indeed a sinkhole to the oubliette.

They do pop up in Google searches, which is my primary search approach for this site.

I do like the Hobby News grouped together. But would be nice if they were also cross-posted to relevant Message Board(s).

christot25 Aug 2017 10:50 a.m. PST

Never read hobby news. I did once. Pointless.
Always read Leon's posts

deephorse25 Aug 2017 11:08 a.m. PST

Don't think I've ever read Hobby News. I check WWII Discussion and the 20mm board several times a day.

Ed Mohrmann Supporting Member of TMP25 Aug 2017 11:33 a.m. PST

Mark me another 'Hobby News' notafan…..

Mark 1 Supporting Member of TMP25 Aug 2017 11:57 a.m. PST

I see two topics here, only partly related.

1 ) "The bug"
I understand Leon's frustration. Many of us have been caught by this bug, some more often than others. But … in Bill's defense, he does not write the software the runs this forum -- he is a user of the software. And other forums suffer bugs as well.

I am a Mod on two fora. The GHQ Forum has its own bug that makes periodic appearances -- from time many posts will be lost, with only an error message "SQL ERROR Log NNNN" left in their wake. We refer to it as being "bitten by the SQERRL". It was for some time a constant source of annoyance. Fortunately, in recent releases of the forum software it seems to be notably less frequent. The Tanknet Miliary Forums have been identified as a Deceptive/ Phishing site for several years now. Attempts to get into the forum through the top level web address tank-net.com are greeted with dire warnings about online risk and malevolent intent. It's all nonsense, of course. But that's still how several web browsers will identify the site. (And that fora, BTW, is run by volunteer Admins who do or have done IT for the U.S., Canadian and Israeli militaries. No slouches on security and software, believe me.)

My point is just that the online world is by no means a perfect place. There are a variety of commercial forum software packages and hosting services. Each combination may have its own quirks, and many times have its own bugs. Switching costs are high (in $ and in time/effort). Hopefully each package gets better as it matures. Doesn't mean we have to like it, but don't presume that TMP's bug is a unique phenomenon. It isn't. At least not to my observation.

2) Posting on the Discussion boards
I, for one, am delighted to have Leon on the discussion boards. I hope he will stay.

I think it is one of the greatest aspects of the online chat room concept that I get to (virtually) meet and have conversations with people like Leon Adler. TMP is a better place for his presence in the chat boards.

(Now Leon, don't blush. I'm being serious here.)

I consider him one of the pillars upon which our hobby is built. Same is true, by the way, for the fellows at H&R and Baccus, etc., and the rules vendors, terrain vendors, etc. Or any of the other proprietors / key decision-makers at the companies that feed our insatiable collective appetite for military miniatures and wargames.

On other fora I have had the great pleasure of chatting with and getting to know many of the authors whose books I have collected and cherished over a period of decades. Here on TMP I get to chat with some of the guys who create the figures I have collected and cherished over that same period.

Leon I hope you stay, and continue to participate. You help make this place what it is.

Thank you all for the understanding and sympathy. Whole thing made worse not just by the frustration but by the feeling that my problem is someone elses when things get cross posted, ruining both entries. Grim.

Ragbones25 Aug 2017 12:35 p.m. PST

Leon, don't stop posting. You'll be missed. I know the "Bug" can be frustrating but not posting would be much worse.

WarWizard25 Aug 2017 1:49 p.m. PST

Is it possible to do a search against the Hobby News postings?

Silurian25 Aug 2017 3:01 p.m. PST

I echo the responses asking you to continue posting Leon. I really enjoy seeing your work.

"Hobby News" is at the top of my page. I guess it's an option on the individual profile pages.
I enjoy it, a lot of the stuff (unless reposted … ) doesn't appear on the boards. The interesting book on Spanish uniforms, for instance, I doubt I would have seen anywhere else.

Major William Martin RM25 Aug 2017 3:26 p.m. PST

But … in Bill's defense, he does not write the software the runs this forum -- he is a user of the software.

Actually Mark 1, he did write the software. Bill has always reminded doubters that he coded this puppy, and that he was the only person who could modify it. As such, "The Bug" rests squarely within Bill's domain.

Does he have other problems to deal with as well? Why yes he does, including the nightly maintenance cycle and associated downtime, the delays that some vendors experience with their "Hobby News" announcements, the delays that many seem to experience in getting their recently-paid memberships credited, etc. However, "The Bug" has been around awhile now and seems in many cases to be getting worse, so it probably should be a priority now.

PiersBrand27 Aug 2017 1:03 p.m. PST

Ive given up too Leon, cant seem to post new topics anymore.

Must be my tablet not liking the forum.

deephorse27 Aug 2017 1:30 p.m. PST

That would be a great shame too Piers. Perhaps we can see your work, and that of Leon, elsewhere?

LeonAdler Sponsoring Member of TMP27 Aug 2017 2:35 p.m. PST

Well that pic worked Piers and dead handsome :)
Its the randomness of the 'bug' and the fact that it not only screws your post but someone elses to. Really depressing.

all I was trying to do is to announce the late Brits were now on sale.

Mark 1 Supporting Member of TMP27 Aug 2017 5:18 p.m. PST

Actually Mark 1, he did write the software.

Let it never be said that I deny my errors when they are pointed out.

I stand corrected.

Not that I post a lot but my recent new topics either got mixed in with other threads or disappeared into cyber space altogether. A shame since I usually post about new items and updates that gamers are interested in.

Not sure what a good viable alternative is.

Shame this site doesn't work.

Lee

Hornswoggler29 Aug 2017 8:54 p.m. PST

Perhaps we can see your work, and that of Leon, elsewhere?

Of course you can, but it would be very poor form to promote another forum here… :o)

Andy ONeill30 Aug 2017 1:20 a.m. PST

I agree but IMO poor form works both ways.
This site is monetised.
I think it's about time "the bug" was fixed.

deephorse30 Aug 2017 4:38 a.m. PST

Both Leon and Piers have a product to sell, and if this site cannot cater to their needs I would expect them to point us to a site that can. It wouldn't affect how often I visit TMP, it's just providing a service to 'the community', which is what I thought Bill was all about.

Marc at work30 Aug 2017 5:33 a.m. PST

What, something like The Guild forums maybe…

Johnny6007 Sep 2017 10:14 a.m. PST

Is this the bug that you guys are talking about?

Earlier today I started a new post with its own title. When it was actually published, it had a completely different title, totally unrelated to my post. The post itself was fine, but the title was totally wrong. Contacted Bill and he seems to have put it right. But is this the thing you guys are talking about?

Oh – and Piers and Leon – stay! Your work is great!

cheers

John
