After you've experienced a gaming hiatus, what caused you to get back to the tabletop?

coopman24 Aug 2017 12:23 p.m. PST

A good book, a movie, a friend mentioning his interest in a particular period.

Kids growing up and a career which didn't require 60+ hour work weeks.

Never really stopped. Had years when I had no-one to play against locally but still painted and read, even played solo.

rustymusket24 Aug 2017 12:58 p.m. PST

Retired and found a hobby shop nearby had gaming.

The only real hiatus was a few years when I was too busy with work to look for gaming. Once I had time, I found some people through a post on the Traveller mailing list, and was right back into it.

A long overdue divorce.

Cons. I always find a momentum swing when I attend a con. I always find some time to paint but after a convention I get a good 2-3 months of quality time behind the brush. However, with the kids and work it's only 1 con per year.

Moved to a city which has an active club.

Friends calling and asking for a game. It worked and we've been playing again for over two years; albeit less frequently than we used to.

COL Scott ret24 Aug 2017 11:26 p.m. PST

A friend asking me if I had ever played, thinking that I might have with my military background.

Second hiatus was ended by my children's interest in "Daddy's good guys". We still call them that in my house.

Khusrau25 Aug 2017 5:33 a.m. PST

Finding a local club had some nice guys playing. None of them rulesets I had any real interest in previously.

Ottoathome25 Aug 2017 7:19 a.m. PST

Insanity.

Doing the same thing time after time and expecting different results.

rmaker25 Aug 2017 11:10 a.m. PST

Never stopped.

Mine is not playing again as it is changing my focus from miniatures back to board games. In regards to sals, the shift is from 15/18 to 28 which is a considerable price increase per casting. Not a huge fan of a lot of trends.
Personally, it is hard to see to paint any size.
I like the concept of stand alone board games even if some systems have expansions. The miniature rules endless source books and required "must be ours" brand is tiresome. So I am shifting back to board games.

Bob Cordery's Portable Wargame rules. See his books and his Wargaming Miscellany blog.
Simple, playable, they put the 'game' back into wargaming for me.

21eRegt26 Aug 2017 6:48 a.m. PST

Never had a hiatus since starting with miniatures. Guess that makes me one of the lucky ones.

After years of doing nothing it took an illness and 6 months of work to get me back into the scene again.

I was active in the hobby as a teenager, then college/grad school, marriage and career took precedence. Once I was able to establish a relatively prosperous home, career, etc, it was time to return to the thrills of my youth.

Henry Martini28 Aug 2017 6:02 p.m. PST

… and after the wife found out, something less matrimonially risky… like wargaming :- ).
