Speed painted a box of Mantic Games zombies (39 in total) over the past couple of days to boos my collection of undead. I've been playing with ideas of zombies vs Vikings and zombie plague during the French & Indian War. I usually don't favor drybrushing anything on this scale but it was a quick way to get the job done on models that maybe don't require that much attention to detail.

I have 20 ghouls to paint up next.

Those look great! (in a rotting, shambling undead kinda way.)

Excellent !

What's your general impression of the Mantic stuff?

I've been toying with getting some of their gear for a while, but I've never actually seen it

@Dwindling Gravitas
They are "OK".
The major pro is that they are cheap and you get lots of models in each box.

They (the fantasy range) are however slightly boring sculpts or just weird looking (Dwarf minis in particular). I guess it's a matter of taste but there is something with the sculpting style that is off and makes the models look very static or have stiff poses.

The assembly is easy, but there is not a lof of extra pieces like in the old Games Workshop plastic kits. The models paint up OK but have "soft detail" in some areas that will require a bit more effort from the painter.

Overall I would still recommend the zombie box, the ghouls are also quite nice, for zombie hordes that can be shoe horned into lots of historical periods.

Thanks very much for the comprehensive reply Anatoli!

I suspect Mantic always figured on using slight modifications to the fantasy figures to do a science fiction game. That plan flopped pretty hard. I actually really like their space orx both in the fluff and the old plastic models. The new resin one would work well as GW Blood Ax clan but I like the orx better.

The story is that the corporation found this primitive and aggressive race on some back water world and some executive thought they'd make great cheap shock troops. Which they did but they also were smart enough to get loose and hijack rides. Now they're mercenaries and pirates that work for the highest bidder. The executive got sacked.
