Seeing as how manners have degraded sharply in the last couple of decades, if one were to extrapolate back to a century and a half, people back then must have at least made an effort to have some measure of decorum that we simply don't see many try to do today.

Either that or I must have been surrounded by a very rare group of people everywhere I went a few decades ago. Even the letters of recommendation and appreciation that people wrote a few decades ago are hardly ever seen these days.
