Please see here for my refight of the Battle of Maldon: link using Baccus 6mm figures and DBA rules from a scenario in Miniature Wargames 35.

Nice report, and a good comment on the command system. I think the DBA 'push back system reflects shield-wall battles well.
And maybe the blade-spear difference reflects the fact that the Vikings were an invading army while the Saxons were made up of locals forced to fight.
On the other hand, I would have thought that the hearth-guard are the very men who might have resisted an automatic advance, as compared to the less professional part of the army. Perhaps a case for an army-specific house rule: Saxon spears must pursue, Saxon blades may pursue.

Very good points. What I was idly thinking about was giving the thegns/huscarls the option of being Spearmen rather than Blades…and maybe making Hordes follow up recoiling troops (as a sign of indiscipline after success).

I think that I need to have a go at Hastings and Stamford Bridge first though and see how I feel afterwards.

All Saxons as Spear? Might work. I like the idea of hordes having to advance, though they won't often get the chance against blades!

I'm genuinely curious… At 6mm, how do you differentiate visually between Vikings and Saxon elements?

Hi Billy Yank,

My Saxon armies have home-made banners, the Vikings have either cast small-semi circular flags or a few bezerker oddballs maixed into the front ranks. You might be able to see the former in this shot.

Most of my 6mm armies have little visual clues in to help me differentiate troop types, if not clearly obvious, and in other periods they might be used to differentiate troop quality.

Baccus have vikings with trousers bound up from the knees down and a mix of helmets and fur caps. The Anglo-Saxons have loose trousers and some Phrygian caps.
