So that's where Moctezuma's heir (Cuactemoc) really sent the treasure, instead of North to Aztlan! Makes a lot of sense now. The so-called Calendar stone was simply a cover stone for their actual gate. And maybe this was simply a ceremonial representation of gate travel, and others like the Maya were well aware of the existence of the ring, before the Aztecs showed up and took it from the Olmec or an even more ancient mesoamericana culture:
I can already imagine hordes of Spaniards flooding out of that giant portal onto an alien world, looking for all that delicious gold. But they'll first have to make it through the legion of ferocious giant chihuahuas that guard that other side of the gate. :) Many have tried to challenge the giant yappy chihuahuas, only to end up as part of ringed "towers" of skulls. Armand, Glad you liked that crazy bit. :) Aside from visiting Nahua and other sites in Central Mexico*, I also enjoyed trips to Yucatán (Mayapán, Chichén Itzá, Cobá, Tulúm, and some "minor" sites in between). My dream is to see the highland Maya sites like Palenque and Tikal one day. I gotta have dreams, right? Dan * If you haven't already done so, you have to see Tehotihuacán. It is absolutely unbelievable. No wonder people of later Mesoamerican civilizations told the Spaniards that the site had been built by gods and not men. |
