Avid WW2 gamer, but I've resisted Bolt Action up until now in favor of Chain of Command. However my local club is deep into the BA, so I thought I would give it a whirl. Knowing nothing about the game, I thought it would be cool to paint up a box of Warlord Gurkhas I have on the shelf. I went online to try and find some sample army lists to see what else I might need only to discover that my chosen army is generally considered "broken," "cheesy," "over the top," and that I will likely be reviled by any player whom I dare show up to play if I use the official Gurkha list. Is this true? Has it been fixed by any sort of errata? Anyone have a balanced version of the official list or is it hopeless?

You're playing an approved list with painted figures.
Are fallschirmjaegers "over the top" too?
Take a week before you bring them and see what the others are playing and then check on line reaction to their army lists.
If it's anything like Flames of War, each nation has its own head scratching loonie rules. Like Yankee Tank Destroyers.
If it's allowed , play it.

So, no German Ubermensch(sp) or Japanese either then? I think Winston has it pinned – some people just don't like to have to think, all armies have their advantages and disadvantages depending on the time and place.

What they probably mean is
"your army is a newer codex than mine and has more crome – therefore it is bad and must be shunned as it can beat me!"

Yeah. That's the accepted definition of "broken". grin

I always figured that cheese meant the other guys army

I take my Italian desert army up against 8th and beat it most of the time. At worst, I get a draw. Are the Italians 'Cheesy'? Forget the spaghetti jokes…
Just play and have fun.

Or don't play match-style – instead design your own scenario(s) and host (judge) the action for a couple of the guys at your club. Then encourage others to do the same, and return the favor by playing in their games in the future.
I've never played Bolt Action match/tourney style, but get a lot out of designing scenarios, and playing in the scenarios others in our group presents here.
