… A Korean War.

"As tensions rise, North Korea has found a supporter even as some US allies reaffirmed they would back Washington in the event of an open conflict. Could Germany – and other NATO members – be forced to fight for Trump?

Amid growing talk of the possibility of open conflict between the United States and North Korea, countries have started to affirm their positions in case violence breaks out on the Korean Peninsula or elsewhere.

Although countries have yet to throw their support behind Pyongyang in the event of a confrontation, North Korea has found supporters in its neighbor China – with some conditions.

"If the US and South Korea carry out strikes and try to overthrow the North Korea regime and change the political pattern of the Korean Peninsula, China will prevent them from doing so," said an editorial in the state-run Global Times…"

Personally …. I do not think China will come to the aid of North Korea, even if it is the U.S. and South Korea who start the conflict (which I doubt they will). As to who is left that will support North Korea …. it is a short list …. Iran and its allies, Cuba, maybe Venezuela, Ecuador, and Nicaragua (and it is a big maybe) … and that is about it. And no …. Russia is not going to get involved in any North Korea war …. but they will position thousands of soldiers at their 12 km border with North Korea to dissuade any refugees from crossing in the event of war….

The big question: IF North Korea launches missiles in the general direction of Guam, and there is a U.S. counterstrike, what will China do?

foxweasel11 Aug 2017 4:32 p.m. PST

Not hard to guess sides in the next war. North Korea and China vs USA, UK, AUS, CAN and NZ. Bit like 70 years ago.

China has said they won't defend N Korea if they start it

I'd think that the billionaires in China would not allow anything to interfere with their lucrative trade deals with their largest consumer, America. China will do what is best for China. Unlike us, I don't think they will let ideology stand in the way of pragmatism.

If nothing comes of this NK issue, at least now we know who China is. And I think that's the biggest thing we should take from this whole thing. That's the real story in all of this.

Dan
PS. By the way, according to the prophetic scriptures of Gene Roddenberry and more recent Trek authors, in the year 2026 (9 years from now) ECON will be formed. Soon that "Eastern Coalition Of Nations" will bring together all Asian and Middle Eastern countries into one solid political entity against the US and Europe.

So let's not panic. China and N Korea still have a couple of years left, nearly a decade, before WW3 starts. :)

Great War Ace11 Aug 2017 6:23 p.m. PST

This is so worked up. The Neewz loves this sort of stuff. But there is no chance that NK will launch any missiles at US and ours. No chance whatsoever. Saying that they will drop some missiles in the sea near Guam is proof that they will never do that. It's like a midget saying that he's going to punch an NFL lineman in the face, in fact, he's going to punch every lineman on the opposing team in the face. Not only will he fail to punch anyone, he will get sat on. And nobody will be sorry for the midget. He knows this. He's crazy but not actually stupid. The POTUS is also acting crazy, and he's got all the big guys on his team. His craziness is crafted to get results that will make him also look good. So he's milking the NK "crisis" for all it's worth.

GWA,

At least now we can see who is for and against the belligerent little person (and the US too). Seeing as how one major power might throw its lot with him, this becomes a lot more than what we saw happening during the First Gulf War with Saddam's Scuds.

Dan
PS. My personal feeling is that, if Lil Kim launches any missiles at all, they won't contain nukes. They'll just be full of nerve gas.

Probably worth thinking a little deeper on this issue – NK is a dictatorship so it makes it easier to assess what they want. We just work out what the dictator wants. Regime change and the end of his personal power base is what he DOESN'T want. Therefore any thing that would threaten his hold on power OR threaten to destroy his power base is NOT what he wants.

Kind of tells you that the bluster from NK is really all about Kim Jong Un seeking to strengthen his domestic situation. Last thing he wants is actual, real war with anyone that could destroy his subjugated country and threaten his hold on power over his people. He doesn't want to actually fight he just wants to sound tough.

Understanding is pretty straightforward really. Responding is the big challenge. How do we respond to Kim's need to appear tough and strong in order to dominate his people and the army/political elite beneath him?

Thats where the real question lies.

Cacique Caribe11 Aug 2017 9:12 p.m. PST

Lol. So then let's make him look like he won a huge victory* and give him South Korea. That will keep him from ever being naughty again.

I hear that Lil Kim was so excited when he saw the movie Ant-Man that he is now working on a plan to miniaturize his entire population, making them just a little bit smaller each year. That way it will look as if he has conquered miles and miles of new territory for his people. :)

Dan
* That way his generals can get more bits for their flashy body armor, like the kind they've gotten so far from all their countless victories: :)

Kiltboy: "China has said they won't defend N Korea if they start it"

Who starts it.
Who Beijing CLAIMS started it.
Could be two very different things.

Whatever happens, Kim will claim we started it.
Who will believe him?
Who will not believe him, but pretend to for political expedience?

Great War Ace14 Aug 2017 9:28 a.m. PST

Do those bling-bearing men have the slightest clue how ridiculous they look?

Barin114 Aug 2017 10:20 a.m. PST

NK ambassadors from Russia and China were called to NK capital for "consultations". I think they should explain to illustrious leader that in case of war he is on his own.
Some of NK military installations are quite close to Russian border, so if USA military will in the end go for military solution of Korean problem nuclear cloud can travel to both Chinese, SK or Russian soil…

Tango0114 Aug 2017 10:18 p.m. PST

This not going well…
