Just finishing some french old guard and left the gaitors till last and now that they are almost finished Im finding the black gaitors with a generally white/blue uniform quite pleasing to the eye.

I think black gaitors are for winter and white for summer?
but wondering is it likely to bother me if I was to play a battle where they would of been white and mine are painted black….its not as if they are the wrong colour entirely.

Though white gaitors look effective as well.

To my eye, white gaiters with white trousers is too much white. I like the contrast between black gaiters and white trousers. Purely subjective, but it looks better to me. I actually use charcoal for gaiters and black for the shoes, again for contrast.

The more I look at the white trousers and black GAITERS the more I like them, I think youre right with it them being too white….. plus it saves a bit of painting.

I use white for only Old Guard:
Grenadiers and Foot Artillery.

For my French Napoleonics in 28-30 MM in the Peninsula, I like "charcoal" gaiters to above the knee when in dress uniform. (I do NOT do Guard units, which I would prefer to see with white gaiters.)

For Victrix French, I mix off-white overalls with black, charcoal, mid-gray and light gray gaiters. I often like the dark brown local Spanish wool overalls, over the above variations. The Peninsular War provides endless variations!

Agree with Ooh Rah – the shoes were leather and the gaiters were cloth so they should be different colours.

I thought white gaiters were only for full dress? They'd get filthy up the ankles within 100 yards of marching.
