Hi all

I can find plenty of uniform references for the British Army serving in the Sudan against the Mahdi at this time but references for what the drums looked like on active service are a bit thin on the ground!

Any suggestions? I game in 28mm btw.

Cheers

Only thing I can think of off hand is to Google various regimental museums and see if there are pictures.

Here is a link to a drummer from the W. Britain War Along the Nile collection. Their research is usually pretty reliable. link

Victorian British drums generally were brass shells with bands painted red. On the red band was a wide stipe usually of the regiments facing color. Upon this stripe was a narrow wavy line of either white or red. On the front of the drum was painted the banner, this generally being the arms of the sovereign over crossed standers and flanked by ribbons bearing the regiment's honors. Above this on the body was a wide ribbon withe the name of the regiment.
