Only while in prison. "Red River Valley" is very popular.

My uncle says I used to play as a kid. I vaguely remember, so I must have been too young to have been any good.

Yep. Hohner Blues Harp. And not too badly ,either. Taught myself a few numbers, and improv quite well too.

Thomas O02 Aug 2017 6:36 a.m. PST

I can probably play one like Bob Dylan, but no I don't play.

7 followed by 4. I know folks love the sound, but I'm not one of them – and I love a lot of traditional and roots music.

4 no musical instrument talent at all. I do sing fairly well though.

JSchutt02 Aug 2017 9:22 a.m. PST

….learned one song so I could check it off my bucket list…which more resembles a styrofoam cup.

Time to stir the pot. Saying one can 'play' the harmonica is like saying one can repeatedly smack a boar in the nuts with an old bagpipe while yodeling off key. Sounds about the same.

Lee Brilleaux Fezian02 Aug 2017 10:53 a.m. PST

Ten hole diatonic – mostly Hohners. Adequate blues player for close on forty years now. Sometimes I play with a rack and a guitar, but like most players I'm better when there's a band and I'm free to use my right hand for effects.

Tacitus might want to expound his views in any bar in the south side of Chicago, and see who agrees with him. We can have a whip round for funeral expenses. Count me out, though.

Depends on who you ask …

Here is Sonny Boy Williamson II, who had to leave a European tour in 1963 pretty quickly after he knifed someone. He was 61 at the time.

No.

A strangely random question! It is not a common instrument. I've met more people who play the ukulele than I've met harmonica players!

Goober02 Aug 2017 3:37 p.m. PST

Yes. Chromatic. Badly, but enthusiastically.

Winston Smith Supporting Member of TMP02 Aug 2017 5:46 p.m. PST

As Moliere said to Voltaire, "A gentleman is one who knows how to play the harmonica, but does not."

Voltaire replied by whipping out his harp and playing "I'm a Man".

How do you spell that ?

wink

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP04 Aug 2017 4:37 a.m. PST

@Lee Brilleaux : I might have been able to guess you could play!

Dagwood04 Aug 2017 9:29 a.m. PST

To paraphrase,

"You know how to play a harmonica, don't you ? Just pucker your lips and blow !"

Personal logo 20thmaine Supporting Member of TMP04 Aug 2017 11:40 a.m. PST

Would that it were so easy, would that it were.

Here is Sonny Boy Williamson II,

You know what's annoying about that clip ? When he just sticks the harp in his mouth, he still plays better than I do.

evil grin

I actually used to play both the Harmonica and the Musical Saw. I had to give them both up when I started getting them confused.

Yes … and while strumming the guitar. Multi-tasking is my speciality!
