I've started up a new project to do some ancients gaming using a mixture of 20mm Newline Designs and 1/72 plastic miniatures. With my first unit finished I thought I'd share a picture of my mercenary hoplites.

more pictures can be found here on my blog

and more information on the project and the armies I plan to build can be found here for those interested in a bit of background

Cheers Jon

A splendid unit

There are 1/72 plastics in the group? Wow, I am truly in awe.

PS. You should ask the Editor to crosspost this thread to the Plastic Figures Board. I think they will be very impressed.

Wow very cool! Great work!

I saw you say the shields are LBMS transfers. Did you use the 1/72 HAT ones and did you find they fitted or needed trimming? Thank you.

Prince Rupert of the Rhine02 Aug 2017 1:12 a.m. PST

Thanks guys

Dan@ opps I should have been clear this unit is all metal but several of the other units in the army are or will be plastic.

Ney Ney@ yes they are the ones marketed fot HaT the fit was very good if anything they were slightly to small as I had to touch up the edges with extra bronze after I applied them where you could see the white paint between the bronze and the transfer.

You may have found your life's work. :) You do know you've got a very distinctively Spartan figure in the front rank, don't you?

Prince Rupert of the Rhine02 Aug 2017 2:32 a.m. PST

Sobieski@ thanks. yeah. There are a couple more in there to I bought them as a regiment pack as these are mercenaries I figured it would work.

Philotep02 Aug 2017 3:09 a.m. PST

Excellent ! Your first attempt ? Wow…
Just one remarque, if you allow me: I think your unit would look better with 4 minis per base… they seem to be in loose formation.

Prince Rupert of the Rhine02 Aug 2017 4:39 a.m. PST

Philotep@ thanks yes my first attempt at 20mm bar the odd dabble with ww2 normally I'm a 28mm man these were an interesting challenge.

Fair point about the basing. There are actually 6 minis per base in two ranks and 4 bases for a total of 24 minis, my light infantry units are 4 to a base (for 16 man units) and my skirmishers are 3 to a base (for 12 man units) so they do look close order in comparison to the other units in the army but yeah 8-10 minis per base shield to shield would look more realistic.

Very, very nice Hoplites! Well painted and the basing is great!

ToneTW@ thanks TBF it was pictures of your stuff that finally gave me the inspiration to get working on mine :)

ToneTW02 Aug 2017 9:13 a.m. PST

Cheers! I'm glad to be of assistance to see your nice paint work. I'm inspired too to see the work of others. I find it really helps to get me motivated, also motivates me to buy stuff for other periods, so its great to see some Ancient Greeks!

Pauls Bods02 Aug 2017 12:36 p.m. PST

They look great ..which ones are plastic?

Prince Rupert of the Rhine02 Aug 2017 12:45 p.m. PST

Pauls Bods@ none in this unit but the armies I'm building are a mix of plastic and metal units so the plastics will be coming.

goragrad02 Aug 2017 1:13 p.m. PST

Ney Ney02 Aug 2017 2:15 p.m. PST
