Hey there. So I'm planning on making some Game of Thrones themed armies.

However, I really like mainly 13th & 14th century armours, the 1400s has too much plate and two handed weaponry for me :/.

I was wondering, would fireforge and perry miniatures in the same army work well? Are they similar enough to fit nicely?
I was planning on making the Perry stuff heavier infantry etc because most of Perry medieval is AD 1400+, and fireforge miniatures as the main bulk of the force, in nice surcoats and chainmail.

Feedback is appreciated.

As far as I know the figures are close enough in scale with each other that there shouldn't be a problem.

BTW have you heard of the new Game of Thrones miniature board game?

You get 103 figures in the starter set plus some other figures like the Hound and the Mountain.

The game starts with the Starks and Lannisters but they'll be adding to it once the game gets going.

The scale of the figures is 32mm.

There's a Kickstater going on right now so you might want to check it out.

Dont neglect Perry's crusades range for lighter armored figures.

Your late to the "wedding" Largoras but welcome aboard.

Yes you can make great Song of Ice and Fire armies out of Fireforge and Perry. Here's a rough guide:

Fireforge for the North (add some fur cloaks from GW) with leaders in more advanced plate (HYW). Midlands (Tully, Frey, Aryn Perry HYW (only plastic foot so far so you have to used metal for mounted).

Perry War of the Roses for South (Knights of Summer).

Leaders of course could wear heavier armor (they can buy it from different sources) but this is a good guide for rank and file.

Northstar (Frostgrave) barbarians make great Wildlings (though rather pricey). Some of the latter Bretonians make OK Night Watch.

Martin has recently confirmed in a Time interview that the books are based on the HYW and War of the Roses as to setting and politics. So any figures for those eras will work well (the North subject to the full brunt of Winter has stayed a bit more feudal).

The direct tie in game from CMON isn't due till 2018, figures are oversized 32mm so won't work with other lines. Nice sculpts based on books – pricey though. Rules have many board game like features and only vaguely resemble medieval battles. Still seem better than current Warhammer and do use mass bases like Kings of War (but with figure removal thank goodness).

But for now build an army Perry/Forge work great. Bring it to DragonCon, Siege of Augusta, NashCon or Historicon and compete for the Iron Throne (we have Knights and Knaves, Fire and Ice editions competitions at all these cons).

Right, thanks for the advice.

I do really prefer 1200s & feudal armour over 1300-1400s where lots of the soldiers were in full plate however.

But I think if some of the lighter soldiers in, lets say a Lannister army, eg. sergeants/infantry would have chainmail and surcoats whereas the men at arms would have plate, I think it would look a bit out of place, but i kinda wanna do that :/

What do you think?

Thomas Thomas02 Aug 2017 9:28 a.m. PST

Of course do as you prefer – one of the reasons I lean toward the above distinctions is that if you like mail – built a Northern Army (in disscussions with Martin at cons, he's said the North is more "mail").

In the Books, Lannister foot form pike blocks with missile troops in between (sounds a bit English Civil War…) but men-at-arms are also mentioned as a seperate body. Even the Lannister's seem to employ some rabble like troops (put in the Mountain's battle).

Plate armor is much discussed though espcially for leaders and "house hold" knights. Lannister men at arms could be mostly mail and gamboson (some of the Perry HYW are just mail/gamboson).

Grab some figures and start painting. I'm hoping to get a whole community of Westeros gamers not tied to any particular figure line. (Ironically if you use the books are sources most inexpensive historical lines are much closer to "canon" than the commerical IP versions).

Right, thanks a lot!

I think I'm gonna have the main body of my Lannister army as HYW men in plate whom are a bit richer and more experienced than just levies.

Whereas I'll get some fireforge figures in mail and make them levies and lower down infantry for the Southern armies.

Thank you for your input!!
