Hi, i'm just getting started in the War of 1812 era in 15mm and i'm curious about some things. Didn't sergeants in the Royal Marines, West Indian regiments, and Canadian militia carry pikes/spontoons? Going by their website photos, Blue Moon has the British line and 93rd sergeants equipped with them but none of the others. If my assumptions are correct, I find this situation to be kind of annoying. I may have to go to Thoroughbred for the Royal Marines. Another question – were sergeants in the West Indian regiments and the Colonial Marines white or black?

The short answer to your first question is yes with exceptions. Pikes were carried by line company and grenadier company sgts. In flank companies, including Candian militaia flank comapnies, sgts carried muskets and swords. Note that some Canadian Regiments, notably the GLI, were trained as light infantry so sgts did not have pikes. So, it depends upon the unit but genrally most Brtish line companis/grenadier companies, sgts carried pikes.

Second question; In the well establsihed West Indian Regiments sgts were black except for the most senior sgt/majors and officers were British regulars. The Colonial Marines largely had white officers (mostly from West Indian regimenst with some RM officers and NCOs)and sgts with some black coproals as this was a very newly recruited unit.

If you more specfic unit requests I would be happy to help. BTW Iti sis nice to see more peope like yourself collect and game the War of 1812.

Thanks for your replies and info. I guess my remaining questions concern whether Blue Moon does indeed arm their sergeants with muskets, and what other options I may have. I wish I could do Knuckleduster with their properly armed sergeants but 28mm is out of my price range at the moment. There doesn't appear to be a lot of dedicated War of 1812 lines.

Yes, several lines in 28mm but not many in 15mm.
