The country's powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said an American Nimitz-class aircraft carrier accompanied by a warship came near IRGC boats patrolling Iran's Resalat oil-and-gas field. The aircraft carrier flew a helicopter close to the Iranian vessels at 4 p.m. local time on Friday, according to the official Islamic Republic News Agency.

I'm not sure how big a deal this is.

"Provocative and unprofessional"

What do those terms even mean to the present Iranian regime and its military?

Lol. Hilarious. Either this is 1) their attempt at being funny, 2) this is a gross mistranslation of what they actually said, or 3) they must not have a clue what their own boats constantly do to other ships while on international waters.

They may have been worried the US Navy was asleep at the wheel again ?

I would be more worried that they were close enough for the carrier to fire warning shots. I would expect that kind of behavior from the escorts.

Everything the Iranians publish or say publicly is aimed at their own people. Keep the population focused on the danger outside your door and they'll ignore all the problems inside the house (that's the theory anyway). They know the US won't attack them unilaterally so they practice a little brinksmanship in order to play it back to the Iranians at home on the evening news.
