I once bought a rather famous set of rules that started talking about "blinds" right on page one. It never bothered to define them. It just assumed that I knew what they were and how to use them. The rules were soon in the marketplace. I can guess from context, but would rather have someone explain what they are. |

"Winston", they seem to be TFL's stock in trade. Apparently a way to introduce fog or war. |

Blinds are markers that may, or may not, represent units, thus fog of war |

I thought blinds were where you hid and waited for the ducks. |

To me blinds seem self explanatory. I guess some need more hand holding than others |

I was confused by them too, but figured it out. Now, what the is a "bound?" |

I wouls suggest If you are new to this sort of thing that you make yor Blinds big enough to represent the smallest unit you field. This helps, as it means that you place the blind in a palce that is credible. Beginners with a small marker tend to find when replaced by the real thing it looks daft and can be shot at from unintended directions. Also don't use too many. As a beginner at the most make twice as many as the elements you are going to deploy i.e 1 real and one "dummy". It is important that you deploy the "dummy" blinds credibly, beginers often place the "real" and then dummies and the dummies are usualy evident. If they try and swap, the position is so badly thought out the threat is not significant. Blinds are not as good as hidden units marked on but infinitely better than nothing and much easier to cope with. we have tried using moving dummies but it slows the game and have never worked well for us. |

Perhaps not "blinds," but for players of "The Sword And The Flame" there are "dummy" unit markers designed by size and shape to occupy the actual space a basic game unit (20 foot/12 horse) would. What they are, how they can work, and how to buy PDF sets CHEAP, can be found via this link TVAG |

Any rule, particularly an IMPORTANT rule on which the whole play of the game depends, should not have to be "figured out". That gave me a rather jaundiced view of a whole set of universally beloved rules. |

So, it sounds to me like a blind is a canard. |

They are whatever the rules say they are. |
jdginaz | 27 Jul 2017 12:44 p.m. PST |
Come-on on, how hard is it to figure out a blind? Some time wargamers amaze me by how much they have to be lead by the hand. It seems that if every little thing isn't explained to the nth degree they go ballistic and heaven forbid that somebody tells them to make a decision based on common sense. |
Northern Monkey | 27 Jul 2017 3:20 p.m. PST |
Depends on the rule set. In the TFL rules I have which use blinds they have a whole section defining what they are. Not sure about other rules which use them. |
Winston Smith | 27 Jul 2017 3:22 p.m. PST |
In this particular set of rules, it was assumed you knew what it was already and how they operated. Suppose a set of rules said Charge Phase, and did not explain if the unit moved further, what, if any, bonus it received in melee, whether the enemy could counter charge, etc. You are ASSUMING that the term is self explanatory, and that there is no need to explain how it works in context. I can assure you it did not. The best way to assure there are arguments in a game is to leave things to "common sense". |
dragon6 | 27 Jul 2017 3:33 p.m. PST |
I agree with you Winston. Terms need to be explained and not assumed |

I thought blinds were where you hid and waited for the ducks. In Louisiana, at least, blinds are where you always claim to be waiting for ducks (or deer) even though everyone knows they're really where you go to drink beer at 5 a.m. LT |
