Going off the deep end here.
I have found figures suitable to convert to modern Swiss.

Do I have to stick to a regional fight against a neighbour or can I go rogue and line them up against all comers?

Amongst my modern 28mms, I already have French, Germans, and Italians. I figure that I can use modern Australians as Austrians and just paint them olive green?

I know the Swiss actually have a desert tropical version of their alpenflage but you just don't see it too often.

Your figures, your choice. I say go for it and enjoy the game. Half the fun can be coming up with the reason for the action. Try an alternative history with the Swiss being Vatican Swiss Guard and an update of the religious wars of the 17th century – Catholic French, Austrians and Italians, Protestant north Germans and British.
