"Something's been bugging me lately, and really ruining the overall fun, immersion, and enjoyment of the gaming hobby for me personally…. and that is the prevalence of "Miniature Abuse" that I see every time I visit the LGS in the form of playing with unpainted minis! It's time that we, as a collective gaming community, come together and set a new standard bar of what is an acceptable level of painting before a miniature can see time on the tabletop. Otherwise, what's the point the hobby aspect of this hobby? Maybe I've just turned into a "paint snob" after my 25+ years of gaming experience…

Slaughterhouse standard. Miniature completely covered in paint: minimum of three colors. If unpainted metal is really acceptable, drive nails into blocks of wood for playing pieces, and save yourself a ton of money.

Or play board games.

Chuckaroobob18 Jul 2017 12:55 p.m. PST

Good luck with this one.

I don't like playing against unpainted armies either. Sorry, but come on! They are supposed to be painted.

Once met a fellow that named off all his armies and I was impressed. He had many. We met up to play a game the next weekend. I got out my my army of fairly well painted troops and he got out his army of well based LEAD! WHAT? Give me a break!!

My opinion; If they aren't painted, you got nothin.

I run all my games with painted figs and terrain, but expending outrage on this is plain silly.

I suggest the original writer spend some time looking into news on Syria or South Sudan to regain a sense of proportion.

Easy enough, I just don't play against unpainted armies, so no tournaments, I just stick to the 'club' games or just paint everything myself.

What if someone showed up with paper or cardstock mini's instead of unpainted lead? How would you folks feel about that? What if they were printed in black and white? How about color?

My stuff is for the most part painted. I might have a few details to finish but most people can't even see that.

I will try to never play against unpainted minis. A guy in our group has cerebral palsy, his painting is pretty sketchy, but he tries. We played a big bolt action game and a guy brought out an entire unpainted force. I offered him the use of my stuff that matched what he was laying out but was painted. He refused. 6 months later we were playing again and his stuff had been primed black.

I was begotten and baptized in the '50s with green plastic soldiers. Heck, we didn't even paint aircraft. They followed orders, lived and died in dirty vacant lots in imaginary scenery, and got lost in the weeds just as well as any painted soldier. And so, 65 years later the little boy inside me is still having fun. One way or the other.

No paint, no play.

Introducing yourself in front of an opponent in a Wargame with all your soldiers unpainted … is like slapping his face …. (smile)

Some folk like to play unpainted while they paint them. Certainly I would play a beginner with unpainted and kids. In the final analysis for me its the Game not the minatures. I would far prefere to play a good p[layer with unpainted than a bad player with painted.

Tango with respect, 'Maybe' your taking the hobby just a 'BIT' too serious? Granted, no paint at all: either too busy or they just don't care.
The 'worst' army I ever saw was just the opposite.
Ages ago (just after 40Ks release) a fellow showed up with what I dubbed the "Krylon army" (Brand in the US).
His entire force of Space Marines (base included) was ONE color, lt. red.
I'm NOT a 'pro' by any stretch of the mind. But I do make effort for them to 'look' like what they represent.
And I have to say..

AGREED.

But a good player paints his figures.

Good players who don't paint are boardgamers.

Retiarius902 Aug 2018 10:21 a.m. PST

i agree with Tango, i ran many convention games for many years and never would consider putting unpainted figures in my games, take the time and do things right

UshCha12 Aug 2018 1:43 p.m. PST

Folk who spend all their time painting are too taken up with the art and not enough on the play. Good gamer's don't want to waste time on excessive figure painting. Excessive painters don't make good player in my experience.
