I am one of those disappointed by Warlords Heavy British Cavalry releases. I was really looking forward to these especially as a friend of mine had seen a pre production model at a show and said it looked good. So to see them pictured, my heart sank when I saw the horses.

So just wondering what my best options are? Will these be the Perry metals that have been out for some time now or the ever dependable Front Rank offerings?

Cost isn't too much of an issue , I just want nice models that are a joy to paint .

I did place a similar thread on the beginners section but for some reason the cross post to this section didn't work .

Thanks guys

I would go for the Perry figures. Excellent sculpting and animation, great historical detail and good production values. Also, they are still about the cheapest figures available in metal. Always my first choice.

I saw in a Wargames Illustrated ad that Victrix is coming out with British cavalry later this year. I'm waiting for these and use Perry to flesh them out. Victrix always has great stuff.

Now that is news indeed. Victrix are great quality plastic castings, but fragile. I have been mixing and matching with Perry plastics to create a British Light Infantry Battn and even getting the parts off the sprue without losing bayonets and musket slings is murder.

I love the topic title. I was just about to pronounce, with great authority, that the Blues were not in the Union, but in the Household etc etc….then the penny dropped.

My derived title actually was non military . I was at a Blondie tribute act concert the other night and one of my favourite covers is "Union City Blue", hence the title :)

Thats interesting news about Victrix as I thought they were going 100% ancient when it comes to new releases. I am a Victrix fan as well and although fragile if your careful with them especially when transporting then they are fine.

I will probably concentrate more on getting my infantry and artillery done and see what developments are at a later date.

Thanks for your input and suggestions

How glad am I to hear that someone has realised that economising on the figures, themselves, is a huge mistake. The time spent on painting and the years you will then look at these figures…..that makes a little more expenditure worth it.

Front Rank at their best are superb. The detail and casting quality is second to none. They are "paint themselves" figures.

and yet. They are "stocky" and ill proportioned. Their legs are stunted and their arms as wide as their thighs. Cavalry right arms can come off at a very strange angle from the thorax.

I have many of their figures in a box that I regard as unusable. I have many that I consider amongst the best I have ever worked with….but still big lads even then!

yep I have the union city blue's too my fellow Blondie fan. Clem Burke the most under rated drummer in music history. But I dont share any passion for Victrix or Front rank stuff sorry. Perry metal is the way to go.

Spent the whole day on Perry Plastics, with Victrix Flank Co arms (Funny thing…and hate to say it…..the fragile Vicrtix extremities are far more detailed).

But the whole exercise has convinced me that, when it comes to painting (unless you have the skills we do occasionally see here), metals any day…for ease of colouring.

Yes I think I will end up going with the Perry Metals. I have been looking through some recent Wargames Illustrated and I cant find any reference to Nap Cavalry Plastics in any Victrix adverts. I do like the Victrix horses that they have done for the Ancients.

I think going with Perry here will keep all of my cavalry standard as my French Cavalry are also Perry.

Its just a shame that the Warlord releases didn't come up to standard and it looks like I am not alone thinking that way. Opportunity missed or messed ?
