… to the Navy!

"The Air Force is fighting legislation directing it to create a "Space Corps" to better specialize and prepare for conflicts in space. They are absolutely correct in doing so, since the Air Force lacks the particular mentality and expertise necessary for what are clearly naval operations.

Sustained operations in space resemble operations at sea. Diversely specialized sailors crew forward deployed ships, conducting voyage planning and contact management familiar to naval personnel. There are orbital buoys to maintain, infrastructure to protect, and eventually boarding inspections to conduct.[1]

The orbital equivalent of afloat forward staging bases will shuttle supplies and rotational crews to vessels that remain in theater, years after launch. In achieving orbit and stationing, maritime professionals will recognize the similarities to anchorage and underway replenishments. To those who point to the challenges of maneuvering a vessel in three dimensions – the Navy already has submariners and naval aviators…."

This makes complete sense. Please remember the first American in space (Admiral Shepard), the first American to orbit the earth (John Glen) and the first man on the moon (Neil Armstrong) were all Naval Aviators.

All of the services (army, navy, air force) have expeditionary expertise and experience and the best way to deal with space ops is to have a combined force where all services use their experience to operate in an expeditionary role, whilst being able to specialise where necessary.

Of course space belongs to the Navy!

Yes, definitely. The AIR Force has no business in space since, obviously, there is no air!

The obvious answer is to give the job to the Marines, they're the only all-arms force in the US inventory. And when the little grey guys in the saucers show up you'll want the Marines on hand anyway…

ScottWashburn,

Exactly! And, as everyone knows, in space we use space-SHIPS!

No argument. "Enterprise" was never a plane.

Well, whichever branch end up on top in space, this thing here needs to experience a little "accident":

Naw, there needs to be a new branch or Space Command, if for nothing more than to be able to tell new jokes.

DSG,

What do you have in mind? :)

The first half of the 20th century saw the rise of air power. The question back then was which service was best equipped to handle these new air forces; was it the Army, or the Navy, or the Marine Corps? All three services developed air power independently until a separate service was created after WW2. In 1947 a fourth service was created call the Air Force. Eventually in time a fifth service will be created for space.

How about the Space Coast Guard fleet! :)

Dan
PS. Or Space FEMA? The last Director did call it "an expeditionary force".

These could be the new uniforms for the space fleet.

And dont forget the Space academy on the Moon

Lol. Pretty soon the Moon is going to be off limits to most. "Jade Rabbit" is just the first of many.
