Blucher decides to make a final stand at Walbeck, however to do so he must break contact with the French and concentrate his four corps there. Three of the four corps are out of supply, and will lose attrition casualties each day until they can be resupplied. To resupply they must halt for a full day. He orders all three to halt and resupply, even though they are at risk of attack in doing so. His 4th corps is two days march from Walbeck and they are ordered to retreat. He also directs that all available supplies will be moved to Walbeck. Fortunately for the Prussians, the French are also very short of supplies, and the Guard have actually run out. The initiative is very much with Napoleon. Due to his recent victories he has captured a considerable number of Prussian supplies. He orders all four corps to halt and resupply, and prepare to attack next day. Both armies are pretty battered. All eight corps have suffered considerable battle casualties, plus additional attrition losses due to being out of supply. Both desperately need to rest and reorganise. However the Prussians are by far the most damaged, and Napoleon is unwilling to allow them time to recover. A map showing the current locations of all corps and supply depots on 26 June 1813 is on the campaign diary blog here link |
