Okay, so I know (Louis) Napoleon III issued new Eagles and revised regulations in 1854. As far as I can make out each infantry regiment had one eagle. This was carried by either the first or the second battalion (not sure which), and all other battalions (or perhaps just companies) carried fanions. The fanion was a smaller size flag, either on its own pole or attached to a musket/rifle (again, not clear). I'm happy with the design of the main colour attached to the eagle, but can't find out if the fanion design was standard. Does anyone know the definitive answers to what regiments and battalions carried what and when? It is starting to drive me nuts, and I'm up against the limits of my Secondary School French. I'm mainly interested in what units took to China in 1859/60, so I suppose the rules for what was carried in the Italian campaign would probably do for me. TIA Trebian |
