well im writing an rpg for the period this is the company level wargaming rules it is a simple approach excuse my english a fine fellow from england will fix the text in the final version the rules are called etat major.

Company Level Rules

This rules are when fighting in a company part of a regiment, the other companies of the regiment are directed by the CM if no captain is present if a captain or major they lead the whle regiment.

The players fire at a target soldier with his skill of shooting by passing a test by rolling equal or less than the indicated number on that skill.

The round ends when all players have fired, then the other company fire back at them the shooting skill of those soldiers is up to the CM, if a hit is marked to a player consult the wound table also you consult the same table when firing at your target.

Then the next step is to calculate the total casualties done by the regiment this is made by adding the players shooting skill then dividing that result example:

A player have a shooting skill of 2 the other a skill of 4 so adding those numbers you get a 6 dividing that 6 you get a 3 so in the this round of combat there were 3 soldiers of the other regiment plus the ones caused by a player.

One thing to remember is that on those days musket fire was so innacurate this can be modified if any player is a major and its leading the regiment with a +1 to roll and casualties.

When company combat occurs it is considered to be one on one a player select a target then the other side do the same a player is targeted, unless he is in the rearguard of the first line, this must be announced before the shooting begins.

If thats the case then the player shoots with a +1 penalty due to smoke caused by the first line that fired before him.

A full round must pass to reload the weapon in this time casualties are calculated the same way less the player caused.

Morale: when half the regiment is done a morale test must be rolled by the players or the captain or major if any by passing a valour test.

If a captain is leading the men only the valour of the captain is tested if passed the regiment remains in position if not runs away.

If a player or captain runs away the penalty is the lost of one point in valour a player that reach 0 is not fit for combat and will be send back home.

the thing is that players level up and may gain ranks they begin the game with a company part of a regiment, but since this is an rpg the combat is a little bit different from a wargame.

the players have skills endurance, shooting, valour and leadership.

then when the players reach a captain rank the are given their own regiment the highest rank is colonel if they survive and gain enough points.

I like the idea… but surely these rules will result in promotion on merit and achievement?

Promotion among officers and gentlemen should be gained by social connections, wealthy patronage, and toadying!

interesting idea Norman D Landings and i will try to get this in the game as well perhaps as a social skill.
