Watched this one again with the family today. Really good, really long, quite the tear-jerker, and I've always had a thing for the lovely Jean Simmons… The version available on DVD today is the "restored version" from a few years ago, when they discovered no complete print of the movie existed, so they spent a lot of money to recreate it. Anthony Hopkins even was brought in to dub a few lines from the late Lawrence Olivier. While the movie may inspire one to go out and built a 'Spartacus' army, the movie has relatively few battle scenes, and those are mostly dominated by gladiators as cavalry. They did march a lot of Spanish infantry around to get some interesting maneuver scenes. The movie is based on the historical novel. I've never read the novel, so I don't know how faithful it is to that. There are a lot of historical figures who make an appearance, but I've not checked to see how accurate their depiction is. |

That movie is one of the reasons I got into gaming with miniatures. The final battle scene made a deep impression on me. It still does, actually. - Ix |

Always going to be difficult to know what really went on as the histories were written by the victors and the enemy was revolting slaves. Spartacus is described as a Thracian but that could mean that he was from Thrace or being trained as a Thracian (type) gladiator. There were other slave revolts but none seemed to change the Romans minds about how to treat their slaves. BTW gladiators seemed to make fairly lousy soldiers. Gladiators as field troops was tried and it didn't work. But remember a lot of the male slaves would have been tribal warriors before they were captured. |

One of my Favorite movies . and if the Romans marching in formation (non CGI..4000 Spanish infantrymen) towards Spartacus is not awe inspiring you do not belong in the Hobby. Also the scenes with Ustinov and Laughton are brilliant! |
