"Articles on duelling tend to concentrate on specific duels or are systematic studies focusing on wider society. This article aims to bring together the challenges and duels identified from primary sources such as naval officers' memoirs, lists and journals and identify what this says about the behaviour of the service from the mid-eighteenth century to mid-nineteenth century when the phenomenon was at its peak. This is compared with the conclusions drawn by other authors for the wider society where much greater emphasis has been placed on the army"
