Just finished my first "outdoor" game of the year, with the Battle of Oak Grove from the Peninsula campaign in 1862. The rules proved to be excellent and the game was a great experience.

Great report – thanks for sharing. The use of ADCs is a key part of the game and keeps both sides engaged. So much more subtle than a 'pips' system.

for some reason I was unable to comment on the blog, google plus is being weird…

anyway, great write up and great looking game. the terrain looked excellent. I do like ACW in 15mm (bc of course that's what I have). how did you add the brown for base of the forest? just scatter material?

I also like the use of cards for noting where ADCs are allotted. I was painting up officer types with swords waving about but that idea is better.

you also have added realism by playing in the 96 degree heat… : )

Thank you Teppsta and Stew…….it's a great system…….the command phase is a "game within a game." As for the woods flock……I made it by mixing some ground up leaves (used a coffee grinder), some sawdust and small pieces of green foliage with Woodland Scenics Earth color fine turf……#T1342. I recycle it and the green field flock on the rest of the table with a small handheld vacuum. That way I can use the different ground flocking over and over.

….and yes….typical Virginia June weather !

We use both (may be overkill)

For ADCs we have mounted officer figures with base edges painted red so they stand out on the table.

If we are using them for a command action we also use cards Dave made up – played face down and then revealing them when they are all on the table.

The quality of the light from outdoor photography is impressive as well
