What novels would you like to see made into movies? My list: Team Yankee Flight of the old dog Cornwells Saxon series Roman Blood by Steven Saylor, A detective story set in Ancient Rome. The detective is called Gordianus the finder. The real Starship troopers as portrayed in the Heinlein. |
Winston Smith | 11 Jun 2017 2:22 p.m. PST |
The Chinese Bandit, by Stephen Becker. One of my favorite reads. I've worn out the paperback. Hold that thought. Not if Tom Cruise bought the rights to it. Jeremy Renner would be good. EDIT. Once upon a time I read that Steve McQueen was interested in it. I could be wrong. |
Winston Smith | 11 Jun 2017 2:23 p.m. PST |
Peregrine Primus et Secundus. By Avram Davidson, but probably unfilmable. But they said that about LOTR and Game of Thrones. |

miniMo | 11 Jun 2017 2:38 p.m. PST |
Temeraire series by Naomi Novik. (Peter Jackson has dropped the option for it, yay; now let's hope a director with any sense of pacing picks it up!) Hammer's Slammers, David Drake Dread Empire, Glenn Cook. (The Black Company, by Glenn Cook is already in TV series development by Eliza Dushku!)

Winston Smith | 11 Jun 2017 2:42 p.m. PST |
Black Company? Let's see how they destroy my impressions of it as a 30 Years War regiment. |
Winston Smith | 11 Jun 2017 2:46 p.m. PST |
Drawing of the Dark? Hell yes. We need more fantasy movies about beer. |

David Weber's "On Basilisk Station", part of the Honor Harrington SF series. |
KSmyth | 11 Jun 2017 3:36 p.m. PST |
Anything by Michael Moorcock. I'd settle for Elric, but anything would be great. |
Cold Warrior | 11 Jun 2017 3:44 p.m. PST |
Red Storm Rising Dragonlance Trilogy Hammer's Slammer's Elric ANY HP Lovecraft story given a big budget treatment (Mountains of Madness for example) |

Sledgehammer and Designated Hitter by Walter Wager Shards of Honor and The Spirit Ring by Lois McMaster Bujold. Witches of Karres and The Demon Breed by James H. Schmitz. "People of the Black Circle" "Black Colossus" and "Red Nails" by Robert E. Howard The Reluctant Widow and The Quiet Gentleman by Georgette Heyer The Oath and the Sword by Graham Shelby. And THEN I want to go to Mars. Well, Barsoom, anyway. Gods and Warlord to follow up John Carter. Leigh Brackett's Sword of Rhianon, Secret of Sinharrat and Road to Sinharrat. Wouldn't be bad if Northwest Smith and Yarol had cameos, either. |

Mountains of Madness could make a good film, especially if done "period", maybe as flashback,a la "First Men in the Moon". Some of Peter F. Hamilton's stuff would have plenty of action--say,Pandora's Star/Judas Unchained. Reaching back, I've been waiting 50 years for a film of The Dragon Masters. Probably impossible to get Vance's tone, though. OTOH, I'd wager Andre Norton's Witch World series would be not only doable, but could become wildly popular these days--perhaps as a TV series. |
Timotheous | 11 Jun 2017 4:43 p.m. PST |
I'd like to see someone produce movies on the rest of the Horacio Hornblower series of novels, starring Ioan Gruffud. We got movies for Mr. Midshipman Hornblower, Lieutenant Hornblower, and Hornblower and the Hotspur. Before Ioan gets too old, I'd like to see Hornblower and the Atropos. Sunken treasure, battle with the Turks, secret missions, it's got it all. |

The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings by a capable director and screen writer who understand that these stories should not be made into 'action' movies. Isaac Asimov's Foundation series. Robert Heinlein's Friday. (Yes, this one can have lot's of action). |
robert piepenbrink | 11 Jun 2017 7:47 p.m. PST |
Hafen, you're right about the Witch World books. A producer/director would probably want more continuity of characters, but they're certainly doable. But you're also right about tone. Troublesome with Vance, and a killer with Davidson. |
Tgerritsen | 11 Jun 2017 8:02 p.m. PST |
While The Hobbit was junk, The Lord of the Rings is about the best version of the series you are going to get. They were very well done and much beloved movies. Destroyermen would be a very good movie (and better series). The Temeriere series would be fantastic as well. |
JimSelzer | 11 Jun 2017 8:16 p.m. PST |
Stirling's Peshwar Lancers would be cool one off |
ZULUPAUL | 11 Jun 2017 8:20 p.m. PST |
CC agree on the Lost regiment series, also for me the "Casca" books about an immortal Roman legionnaire who was at the crucifiction of Christ & was told he would stay the same until the return of Christ. Eternal soldier. |
rmaker | 11 Jun 2017 9:06 p.m. PST |
Roman Blood by Steven Saylor, A detective story set in Ancient Rome. The detective is called Gordianus the finder. Why stop there? ALL the Gordianus books. And the Marcus Didius Falco books by Lindsey Davis, too. Dudley Pope's Ramage books. Michelle West's The Sacred hunt duology. wrgmr1, Brazen Chariots, while it (and The Gods Were Neutral) deserves a movie, it isn't a novel. |
basileus66 | 11 Jun 2017 10:06 p.m. PST |
Two novels written in collaboration by Frederik Pohl and Cyril Kornbluth: Gladiator-at-Law The Space Merchants |
Gunfreak | 12 Jun 2017 1:28 a.m. PST |
Any of the Hornblower/Aubrey books (would have loved a movie about the actual master and commander book) Mabye Sharpe's eagle done on a high budget. So that scary fench column has more than 20 guys in it. |
Vigilant | 12 Jun 2017 1:47 a.m. PST |
Another vote for Hammers Slammers – Rolling Hot would be my favourite. |
TheGiantTribble | 12 Jun 2017 1:51 a.m. PST |
Legend – by David Gemmell although I strongly feel Hollywood would bog it up badly. |
Cerdic | 12 Jun 2017 3:14 a.m. PST |
Any of John Masters books, especially his First World War trilogy (Now God Be Thanked, Heart Of War, and By The Green Of The Spring). Highly unlikely though. He is viewed these days as a racist relic of empire because he wrote a lot of books about India and the Raj. I can only assume that people have confused the attitudes and views of his characters with those of the author! He wrote a lot of historical novels, so of course there are racist characters. But what really stands out is his love of India. He obviously thought it was a brilliant place! He spent a lot of time in India. Before he was a writer he was in the Indian Army and served with the Gurkhas. He fought in Burma with the Chindits during the Second World War, so he knows what he is talking about when writing about soldiers. |
Texas Jack | 12 Jun 2017 4:21 a.m. PST |
I´m with Gunfreak, I would love to see all of Jack Aubrey done up right, not as a Frankenstein´s monster. Of course Master and Commander was a fine film, it just wasn´t Master and Commander. And just for fun, Turtledove´s The War that Came Early series would be a hoot. |
goragrad | 12 Jun 2017 5:04 a.m. PST |
Another vote for Drawing of the Dark. Sword at Sunset. Eagle of the Ninth – done right. A Small Colonial War and sequels. Legend and the rest of the Drenai books. Lost Regiment – what Victorian era AFVs would probably have been – might get interest enough to get Fortschen back in the saddle with the second cycle. Reckoners trilogy from Sanderson. Only two books into his Way of Kings and it would require a miniseries at least for each book. |
Hafen von Schlockenberg | 12 Jun 2017 5:41 a.m. PST |
goragrad--you just reminded me--I turned "The Eagle" off a third of the way through. Guess I'll have to force myself to get through the rest. USAFpilot--of course, good Tolkien would be Number 1 for me too. Which means I hope you're wrong,TGerritsen. In fact, I'd bet on it. Unfortunately, by the time it happens, neither of us will likely be around to collect. Robert--can you imagine someone trying to do the Esterhazy stories? |
Earl of the North | 12 Jun 2017 6:23 a.m. PST |
I have never been happy with the film version of any book I've liked Sums it up for me. On the other hand I much prefer the GoT TV series to the books, so maybe if I'm not a fan of the novel I'll enjoy the movie more. |
brass1 | 12 Jun 2017 8:22 a.m. PST |
The Chinese Bandit, by Stephen Becker. One of my favorite reads. I've worn out the paperback. Hold that thought. Not if Tom Cruise bought the rights to it. Jeremy Renner would be good. Once upon a time I read that Steve McQueen was interested in it. I could be wrong. That summer they hanged a fat man at the Western gate as a warning and example to all. Best adventure novel ever. I always envisioned Steve McQueen as Jake Dodds. The second book in the trilogy The Blue-Eyed Shan would make a pretty decent movie, too. Aside from that: Armor by John Steakley (Starship Troopers for grown-ups) The Golden Ocean by Patrick O'Brian (his second ever sea novel} The Unknown Shore by Patrick O'Brian (his first ever sea novel) Finder and Bonedance by Emma Bull Sword at Sunset by Rosemary Sutcliff Firelord by Parke Godwin Princess Ryan's Star Marines by Mark McLaughlin (okay, I know the author) Edit: forgot the A Small Colonial War trilogy. Silly me. LT |

To add to the above:- Philip Kerr's Bernie Gunther novels. Katharine Kerr's Deverry series C J Cherryh's Morgaine quartet, Chanur series, or Faded Sun Laumer's Retief series Poul Anderson's Flandry books. Evan John Ride Home Tomorrow (3rd/4th Crusades) John Biggins Otto Prahaska series (WWI) Elizabeth Boyer's Alfar series Lois Mac Masters Bujold Vor series & Curse of Chalion Brian Daley's Doomfarers of Coromande; Alacrity Fitzhugh and Hobart Floyt Trilogy. Just too many to mention |
Greg G1 | 12 Jun 2017 1:27 p.m. PST |
The Forever War ~ Joe Haldeman The Kraken Wakes ~ John Wyndham The Chrysalids ~ John Wyndham and a decent re-make of Day of The Triffids ! the sixties version is awful. |
Hafen von Schlockenberg | 12 Jun 2017 1:58 p.m. PST |
The Triffids TV series wasn't too bad, though. |
robert piepenbrink | 12 Jun 2017 4:54 p.m. PST |
You know what would be cute and doable these days? Alexi Panshin's Anthony di Villiers novels. Rite of Passage would also be doable--but not cute. Sutcliff. No one mentions Rider on a White Horse. |
robert piepenbrink | 12 Jun 2017 4:58 p.m. PST |
Hafen, you've got an idea with the Eszterhazy stories. Not a movie, but about one (American) season's worth of television, and then stop. If anyone wants a follow-up, they can do four or five Limekiller pieces. |
Hafen von Schlockenberg | 12 Jun 2017 5:18 p.m. PST |
Well,it would make for an odd series. With an odd protagonist. What with the Phrenology and all. But I suppose it could be sold as Steampunk. After all, they did it with Dracula. |
Dave Jackson | 13 Jun 2017 5:22 a.m. PST |
Lot of good ideas there. Many would be better if done as a mini-series tho. |
