Like it says in the title, gents:

Don't know where to start on this – the unnecessary-ness? The extreme unlikeliness that it'll be anywhere near as good as the original? How CGI will inevitably fudge it up?

The only consolation is that – so far – all they've done is pick up the rights.
I very much hope that's as far as it goes.

May all concerned be trapped in a flooding pressure compartment.

It just so happens I watched the directors cut the other day. I have seen it in German with subtitles. I have seen it with the English dubbed. This is a great movie either way. Acting, writing, photography, everything. These continual remakes of movies are absurd. Let great works like these stand alone. Ok. Maybe a remake of Waterloo. Still one of my favorite movies but I can never get enough on that subject. Can you imagine a remake of Zulu?
Give me a break. That could never be.

I don't know if it is a form of insanity or a complete lack of original thought but this sort of thing is infuriating! Classics are that for a reason.

Winston Smith11 Jun 2017 7:10 a.m. PST

Don't worry. There will be a love interest between the second lieutenant and the torpedo mate 3rd class.

Piquet Rules11 Jun 2017 7:10 a.m. PST

Original ideas are virtually non-existant in the realm of film and TV. Remakes, super heroes, zombies. Blch.

No doubt they'll substitute Americans for the Germans.

Winston Smith11 Jun 2017 7:15 a.m. PST

Running out of ideas? Suggest a new one. This is a business where if you don't make $250,000,000 USD return on investment, it's a failure. Are YOU going to take a chance on something original with that kind of responsibility?
Art??? What's that?

Part of the investment in a movie is the rights. If you can sell them to someone else, fine. It's a business.
How much do you want to bet the remake never gets made? It could just be a "property" that gets traded back and forth, making money each time it changes hands.
Hollywood accounting.

What can go wrong with a reboot…I mean, they just did The Mummy this weekend!

:-)

attilathepun4711 Jun 2017 8:43 a.m. PST

Well, there have very occasionally been remakes that were far better than the original. I will cite the Russell Crowe version of "3:10 to Yuma" as a concrete example. However, I would certainly not bet the family farm on a "Das Boot" remake turning out even acceptable, much less actually good.

BrianW11 Jun 2017 8:51 a.m. PST

That article was dated June 26, 2015. I'm guessing (hoping) that nothing came of it.

Maybe they were just waiting for the right sassy love interest to come along and be the first German female submariner?

basileus6611 Jun 2017 9:47 a.m. PST

Heretics! Burn them at the stake!

Winston Smith11 Jun 2017 9:47 a.m. PST

Who said anything about female?
This is 2017 after all.

Norman D Landings11 Jun 2017 10:28 a.m. PST

Good spot on the date, Brian – I saw it cited in a list of upcoming remakes dated Jan 17. Hopefully this is languishing in Development Hell.

coopman11 Jun 2017 10:31 a.m. PST

A female who dressed as a male crew member to get onboard and experience life aboard a U-boat!

emckinney11 Jun 2017 10:35 a.m. PST

Yeah, two year old news isn't significant.

Maltese Falcon was a remake.

His Gal Friday was a remake.

There are more terrific films that were remakes--far better than the original. The real trick is to pick films that had a great central idea, but just missed the mark.

Hafen von Schlockenberg11 Jun 2017 11:03 a.m. PST

The Heston Ben Hur was also a remake.

So was the Judy Garland Wizard of Oz,for that matter.

Pan Marek11 Jun 2017 12:09 p.m. PST

What you're all missing is that this one will be a musical.

Hafen von Schlockenberg11 Jun 2017 12:19 p.m. PST

But I heard it was going to be a porn version, like The Hunt for Pink October: "Das Booty".

haywire11 Jun 2017 1:33 p.m. PST

But in its native Germany, Bavaria Studios has picked up the rights to the film, and is planning to remake it.

So its not Hollywood?

Then I am OK with that….

Allen5711 Jun 2017 1:57 p.m. PST

If remakes turn out to be a good film I will watch it. At present I have sworn off the Star Wars franchise. Not much original in the last two films. If remakes don't make the grade I will happily listen to you guys rip it. Entertaining either way. I do bemoan the lack of original new work but perhaps there is. It seems there is a lot of new work just not in the categories we would wish. I admit to being a fan of war movies, sci fi, and westerns. It does not seem there is much new in these categories.

@Winston Smith. For many years I have suggested that a movie based on the book Team Yankee would be a blast. Wish someone would pick up that one. I love the M-1 Abrams.

Norman D Landings11 Jun 2017 2:46 p.m. PST

I'd disagree on the Westerns.
I reckon the past ten years has seen a steady stream of big-screen westerns, the majority of which, sadly, have had a lukewarm reception.
3:10, Assassination of Jesse James, Seraphim Falls, Appaloosa, True Grit, Blackthorn, Django, Meek's Cutoff, The Homesman, Lone Ranger, The Salvation, Bone Tomahawk, Revenant, Hateful 8, Valley of Violence, Diablo, Slow West, Free State, Jane got a Gun, and M7 – all in the last decade.
Bunch of pseudoWesterns like Cowboys & Aliens, Jonah Hex, Million Ways to die, No Country for Old Men, Red Hill, Good/Bad/Weird, Sukiyaki Django.
And a whole slew of straight-to-DVD offerings.

But all you hear about is how "they don't make Westerns anymore".

Hear that?

That's the sound of a barrel bottom being scraped. There has GOT to be some fresh ideas out there in fiction-land.

Cyrus the Great11 Jun 2017 4:27 p.m. PST

It always fun to see old farts carping about their favorite movies being remade and the lack of original ideas from Hollywood.
It has nothing to do with it. The are remade for the current movie audience. I don't know how to break this to you…you aren't it! Do you really think Jurgen Prochnow has the box office appeal to pack the current movie audience in?
If your answer is anything but "No" you are deluded!

basileus6611 Jun 2017 10:12 p.m. PST

Cyrus

Regardless… it is a heresy! What next? Casablanca?

Norman D Landings11 Jun 2017 11:48 p.m. PST

LOOOOL!

Cyrus, mate – Das Boot got it's first theatrical realease in 1981, and a re-release 1997.

I don't know how to break this to you, but… Jurgen Prochnow was NOT the box-office headliner of the early '80s!
His name was NOT packing theatres in the late '90s!

If you reckon this is about equalling the colossal star power of Jurgen "is he the main character's boss, or the main character's dad?" Prochnow; then we can expect to see a Hollywood titan like… ooh, I dunno… Matthew Modine in the conning tower. Maybe a Brendan Fraser if we're lucky.

There is always the chance or hope the remake will be better. My wife bought me a boxed set of "The Maltese Falcon" The original movie was originally made in 1931, the next in 1936 as "Satan Meets a Lady". Both of these SUCK!!!
The final version with Humphrey Bogart was made in 1941. A MASTERPIECE!!! So you never know.

Marc33594 Supporting Member of TMP12 Jun 2017 2:35 p.m. PST

One can hope but unlike the two previous attempts at The Maltese Falcon Das Boot did not suck :)

One day they will try to re-make Zulu! Something which should never happen.

Review of Das Boote remake. "This movie lacks depth."

Matsuru Sami Kaze22 Jun 2017 12:28 p.m. PST

I was puzzling over some anomalies in Das Boot the other day. The Captian-Leiut made very few course changes under depth charge attack. I'd add that to the remake. And at a certain depth the thermocline barrier (cold water) would deflect sonar. I'd add that to the remake. The director never thought of the BOLD unit…the bubbling unit that held at 200 feet. They never released one. Nor a Sieglinde, the sonor reflecting bubble maker that scooted around for a while at six knots underwater. Might add one of those.

Lion in the Stars22 Jun 2017 8:23 p.m. PST

Guess the Type VIIs could get down deep enough to clear the upper thermocline (which is just below 200ft), wiki says they could get down to 700+ feet!
