The Team Yankee novel provides maps for its battles, including elevation lines, but no scale is given.

Team Yankee (the game) gives no ground scale.

Therefore, how would you go about creating a Team Yankee scenario based on the novel? (Rather than using the simplified/modified scenarios provided in the ruleset.)

Do you mean the GDW Team Yankee or the Battlefront Team Yankee?

If you play on the same figure scale, 1 to 1 for Battlefront, I don't see why you would need to change a scenario.

Obviously if you used a larger scale game there would be changes but then you wouldn't be playing the same scenarios

Or maybe I don't understand the question?

There's no indication in the novel of how large an area the maps cover. The question is, what is the map/ground scale, and how do you convert that to a game that doesn't give a ground scale?

Use the weapon ranges in the game as a guide?

Do the maps show more than one village? In Germany they were typically 3-5 km apart.

I think Dragon 6 may have the answer--get a copy of the GDW Team Yankee, since it contains scenarios for all of the battles in the book, IIRC.

Back in the good ol' 90s the was a computer game that used counters and hexes. You could also design your own scenarios.
I picked up, at a gun show, TC 7-10-10 The Rifle Company "How the dismounted rifle company moves when not in contact with the enemy" and "Actions of the dismounted rifle company upon contact".
Of course this booklet fascinated me and I wanted to convert the instructions into a computer scenario.
On page 1-8 there are instructions on overwatch and weapon ranges:
Weapon | M203 | M16 | M60 | Dragon | TOW | 81-mm
350 | 460 | 900* | 1000 | 3000 | 4597
*The M60 tracer burnout is 900 meters.

Well, using the above ranges dictated how many hexes it was from terrain piece to terrain piece. After hours and hours of tweaking (basically, until I could win!)(the US Army wouldn't give me a manual on how to advance on an enemy with being killed, would they?).
So just start with basic ranges as your guide, read the narrative carefully, and tweak until you're happy. I don't think that the Russian player will have much fun unless you add a mission modifier or campaign goal; maybe win one scenario for every 3 played?
