What kind of battles are you using the GASLIGHT rules for?

Winston Smith03 Jun 2017 8:59 a.m. PST

I sold off all my VSF stuff a while back. However I used to use GASLIGHT for straight historical skirmish games. It works fine for French and Indian War, with proper stat lines.
Like TSATF, it's a fine "toolbox" set of generic rules.
Considering you have to make everything up anyway…

Daydreaming. My group isn't interested in its purvey.

Mutant Q03 Jun 2017 9:16 a.m. PST

Shagnasty:

Sadly, that the same case for most the games I own (miniature and RPG).

Gave up when, while discussing it with the author, we were told we were doing something wrong. I showed him in the rulebook where it explained to do things exactly the way we did it.

Author:"But that's not how your supposed to do it."

Neither Chris nor I recall such a conversation; however, if it did take place I am surprised that that would be enough reason to discard a set of rules if you are having fun playing them. It is not uncommon for errors to make it through play testing or editing. GASLIGHT is over a dozen years old, used for VSF, pulp, historical, colonial, underwater, fleet, and other actions. Such an attitude seems surprisingly unforgiving.

We're sorry if you were somehow offended, whether in person or online. GASLIGHT is in many ways a toolbox to be tailored to suit individual club and group preferences. I don't know that we have ever told anyone that they couldn't or shouldn't modify the rules to suit their own preferences. Since GASLIGHT is over ten yours old and has gone through several printings and HUNDREDS of convention games, we have found that slight modifications from the written rules work out better with new players in large games at conventions. Even the members of our gaming group modify the basic rules!

Gaslight is an incredible set of rules. Taken as a whole I am firmly convinced that they are one of the few sets that really set the standard for the genre they cover. I am a massive fan of Battles by Gaslight. You can run very large games quite quickly and have loads of fun. I played in a Gaslight game near Dayton earlier this year based on the movie Red Dawn.We were the US Army defending it from invaders including Soviets, Predators and Martians who wanted to capture or enslave our men. Great game and used some new concepts from a movie based variant released for Gaslight. Just really great stuff!

Oh, and any time I have contacted Buck or Chris they have been nothing but helpful and generous with their replies and help.

As Buck said, GASLIGHT is in many ways a really good
'toolbox' set of rules, much like TSATF.

A lot! My Roadwarrior game at Cold Wars and FallIn use it and we have used it for Bug Hunts, Slender Man and a bunch of others.

I'm more interested in what I WILL be playing; Saturday is going to be a game after a fairly long hiatus. No telling WHAT our fiendish gamemaster's set up will be.

Have done Barsoom-style Mars and Pulpish darkest Africa, though usually in a thinly disguised version on our own continent of Randistan.

I just wish I could get my head around 'Fleets.'

LostPict, that is one awesome looking game. As for GASLIGHT it is the go to set of rules we use for most everything. Usually modified to suit what we're doing!

"Tool Box" is such a great term for describing Gaslight and it made quite a splash years ago when it was introduced.

Chris and Buck are some of the most approachable and easy going guys you can meet at a con. I find that conversation pretty unbelievable if they were in fact who you spoke too.

I use them still for Victorian Science Fiction…

TheBeast Supporting Member of TMP23 Jun 2017 5:58 p.m. PST

Thanks to cybrt54 for running the game on Saturday. HAS been too long. (Is Sean doing to do an AAR on his blog?)

What do I use GASLIGHT for? Being the first wiped out.

Cracking good time, still!

Doug
