"There should be no doubt that Chris Nolan's Dunkirk will be an incredible thing to watch. His films inspire and even more importantly, challenge us to question long-held assumptions about truth, belief, culture, and politics. His Dark Knight Trilogy magnificently pressed audiences to think deeply about our form of government, how evil is dealt with in the world, and human nature itself. Dunkirk will surely present similar themes, this time based on true events. But if the gravity of Dunkirk is to be understood, if answers to questions of resolution, survival, sacrifice, and victory are to be grasped, audiences should have some context of what occurred immediately before and after. For many, Dunkirk will be a tale begun in medias res. How thousands of British and French soldiers ended up crammed onto a small stretch of beach, what their successful evacuation meant to the broader Western resistance, and how Winston Churchill's leadership carried them at every turn make the "Miracle at Dunkirk" even more compelling…"
