In building my British Armored Division, the rules regarding a motor platoon give the option for selecting rifle sections in a halftrack. However, the rules also give an option for having carrier sections. However, the rules don't seem to specify how many carrier section equal/match up to a rifle section.

For example, you can select a carrier section, but each such carrier section is comprised of a carrier with a 3-man rifle team, a carrier with a piat team and a carrier with a light mortar team. Whereas, a rifle section in a halftrack is 8 men with a Bren team.

What am I missing? I hope I am making sense of the confusion from which I suffer…

Any and all Battlegroup vets, I am looking for your help.

Thanks.

You aren't missing anything.

A Carrier section with 3 carriers is equivalent to a rifle section with 1 halftrack.

Thanks for the reply Major. But I still fee that I am missing something.

If I select a motor rifle section mounted in a halftrack, that gives me 8 men (bren team included I believe in the 8 men). i get 8 men with a bren. Nothing more. This is relevant to when I would drive the halftrack to where I would dismount and have 8 figures based and ready to move.

If I select a carrier section instead, I get three 3-man carriers: a 3-man rifle team (with a bren), a 3-man light mortar team, and a 3-man piat team. 9 men including a bren, a mortar and a piat. So, if I dismount this section during the game, I would need 9 men based, with a piat team and light mortar team? If I chose 3 full carrier sections instead of 3 full motor rifle sections, the composition of the entire platoon seems vastly different.

I get that the carrier section is more than twice the cost of the motor rifle section above, and that points may dictate how many of these I could select. However, it would seem that the carrier section provides more options for flexibility in firepower?

Either way, I am not sure I get why this is. Thoughts?

A carrier section is part of the scout platoon and not the motor Platoon therefore a different to&e

This might help explain it.

They are two different units.

The Motor Platoon is infantry in Half Tracks and the Carrier Section is not part of it.

The carrier section isn't an option for the Motor Platoon.

Piers, thanks for the answer, but now I am really lost. I am looking at Page 148 of the Rulebook which covers the Motor Infantry Platoon. The Platoon compassion says "1 Platoon Command Section, 3 Rifle Sections, a PIAT team and up to 4 Platoon support options." Right below that, the Platoon composition is broken out and provides that the 3 Rifle Sections are 8 men with a Bren mounted in a halftrack. Now, right below that is a separate box for a Motor Rifle Section for 25 points, which I assume gives the player an option to purchase a single Motor Rifle Section mounted in a halftrack for 25 points.

Now, to the right of box showing the single Motor Rifle Section for 25 points, there is a box for the Carrier Section at 54 points. If the Carrier Section is not an option for the Motor Platoon, why is it on the same page as the Motor Infantry Platoon? IS a player only able to buy a Carrier Section as a section separate and apart from a Motor Infantry Platoon (or in lieu of a Motor Infantry Platoon)?

Once that question is answered, then I am still wondering what or how the individual figures work when the carrier section reaches its destination and the teams dismount the carrier? There are nine such figures in total…

Sorry I seem so daft, but the rules are not super clear on this.

Its on the same page as its part of the same army list, its not part of the Motor Platoon. Its there as its part of the infantry section.

Same as the individual Motor Platoon section box next to it – Its there so you can buy just a single section.

The unit is three Bren Carriers with three teams of three figures. They work in three groups of three when they dismount.

Hope that helps mate.

The Carrier platoon is selected from the "Infantry Units" choices, which is why it's on the same page as the Motor Platoon. (Look at the US list for an Amphibious Assault battlegroup, you can take either an Assault boat team or a Ranger assault boat team)

Got it. That helps. So, last question. If they work in groups of three, when I model the figures, are they as follows:

a Bren team of three (which is really a figure holding the Bren and two supporting riflemen);
a PIAT team of two plus an extra rifleman; and
a 2' mortar team of two plus an extra rifleman.

I am merely thinking of the AB figures I would buy to compliment this.

Thanks for all of the help.

Yes… That's right mate.

You're really looking at six riflemen and the Bren Group as the PIAT and mortar were left in the carrier unless needed.

Remember these guys are there to look around and report back, not go tank hunting or get into firefights
