These 'what ifs' often don't contemplate the psychological shock for modern soldiers upon realising they have been mysteriously transported into the long past – and sundered from family friends, presumably with no way home.

Exactly. The existential shock would be devastating. And, no, there is NOTHING in the manual to address THAT.

An amusing hypothetical. And, like most hypotheticals, totally absurd….(As are most/nearly all of the responses…)

But very entertaining and funy too! (smile)

My vote still go for the Romans in a hand to hand combat and the endurance on the march (smile)

The Roman Legionary – Well-Trained and Excellently Equipped

"The Roman army was the closest the ancient world had to a modern army, with disciplined troops uniformly organized and equipped. As in a modern army, their fighting equipment was important, but so were many things that weren't directly about battle…"

They're Marines, would it take a unit. I would have thought a single Marine with a combat knife would suffice! :>)

Here's a thought:

Considering that the Roman Army was the first army to have modern style TO&E's, with specialists, standardized unit structures, engineers, armorers, fire support, etc…

And that no prior armies did this to anywhere near that extent, nor did any armies after for quite a while afterwards…

Making this modern approach to organization an extreme historical fluke…

Perhaps this already happened. Or something like it.

It`s OK Charlie12, not all of the responses are serious ones !

Transport a force of 1,200+ equipped with rifles, artillery, rockets and machine guns and have them try to defend themselves against some very determined tribesmen with big cow-hide shields and spears… also let the modern force have an over-confident, arrogant attitude towards those backward "savages" with their primitive weaponry… and it may not prove to be such an easy touch!

Isandlwana.

Factor in drones and radios to the Isandlwana situation.
