The HAWKs have been putting on land battles under the banner Armies for Kids for several years. We run a game at Historicon and then when it is over, the kids (under 10 years old) take home fully painted armies, rules, dice, tape measures, and often some terrain pieces to play the game at home with their buddies. This year, in addition to a Franco Prussian war 15mm project, we also put together a naval project.

Using dollar store wooden sailing ship kits each kid will be issued two assembled and painted boats. They will then select from a stack of sails to personalize and attach to the masts. When the game is over, they will take home a box with the rules, dice, measuring sticks, their two boats, plus two more to decorate at home.

If you want to try out the rules, they are posted here: PDF link

What a fantastic idea.

HAWKS have been doing this for a number of years –
Armies for Kids, that is.

Several of us have been very happy to contribute figures
and in one case a painting service over the years.

A very very worth while effort

I hope a lot of people steal this idea. I won't steal it, because I've been turning over something similar in my mind, with dragons…

You fiends. How insidious. The kids don't stand a chance; they'll be hooked for life!

A marvellous idea. Thanks for doing it!

Ed has been a generous contributor over the years. Thanks to all those who help. This project began with a donation from Wally Simon's estate some years ago.

Feel free to copy the idea!

Also, if you have a youngster at home and want to try the rules, I'd be happy to get some feedback.

Love it. Do you make the dices or can you buy them?

What's the rough scale of these boats?

surdu200524 May 2017 2:53 a.m. PST

devsdoc:

I use normal dice but I put stickers on three of the sides for the game. You could easily just say that a 6 is a hull hit, a 5 is a sail hit, and a 4 is a gun/hull hit.

Minibeady:

I don't know if the ships have a scale. The hulls are about 9 inches long, including the bowsprit. The top of the masts are 6 inches. You could easily use normal wargaming ships, Sails of Glory, or those ones that were popular ten years ago that you punched out of cards and assembled.

What dollar store?

Chris Palmer24 May 2017 2:07 p.m. PST

We got them in various Dollar Tree stores last Fall. I haven't seen them in the stores recently.

An idea for boats…

Boy Scouts of America has a boat kit for the "Raingutter Regatta" races. They are available thru BSA themselves as well as model RR hobby stores and even craft stores like Michaels and Hobby Lobby. They usually sell for around $3 USD – $5 USD each. If I recall correctly there are both single hull and trimaran hulls available.

I ran the Pinewood Derby (car) races for my sons Scouting group and we started the Raingutter Regatta (boat) races the last 2 or 3 years before my son aged out of Scouts. When I saw the picture and diagram in the PDF, I thought of them right away.

Here is a link to a site called Hobby Masters that includes boat kits and decal sets:
