Which historical samurai movies would you recommend to your fellow miniature wargamers?

Desert Rat20 May 2017 11:45 p.m. PST

Kagemusha and Ran are must see

Samurai Elb21 May 2017 1:57 a.m. PST

For me the Seven Samurai from Akiro Kurosawa is a must for samurai movies even it dies not represent an historical event.

MHoxie21 May 2017 2:18 a.m. PST

Heaven and Earth

EDIT: Seconding Ran and Kagemusha. The final scenes of Kagemusha gave me goosebumps, literally.

Kurosawa knew a lot about directing movies, but very little about tactics!

Watching Seven Samurai this weekend and greatly enjoying it.

Interesting parallels with The 13th Warrior as well.

Here are some of my favorites: Yojimbo, Sanjuro, any and all of the Zatoichi movies and the Hidden Fortress.

Second heaven and earth.
And while no fancy armor 13 assassins is awesome.

Dervel Fezian21 May 2017 3:22 p.m. PST

Heaven and Earth…

rxpjks121 May 2017 3:30 p.m. PST

Heaven and Earth is the best. Try Samurai Banners as well.

Mako1121 May 2017 3:47 p.m. PST

I agree on the above.

Last Samurai is also quite entertaining.

Forget the name of it, but the last, big ninja movie was quite good too, if you like ninjas. Modern era though.

The Admiral Roaring Currents where Koreans battle Samurai invasion very entertaining!

Throne of Blood. Not "historical", but it is Shakespeare with Samurai. One of the greatest final scenes I have ever seen on film.

Twilight Samurai – a very good duel scene and a final fight scene – but also shows the family and social side of being samurai.

Eleve: isn't that the one where a functionary is forced into the duel? I seem to recall such a movie and it being very very good.

The first Karate Kid was really good, as it was'nt just about the fighting. Pat Morita was just super, and really made the movie, tho I often wonder how the late, great MAKO would have been, had he been availible(he was the producers first choice).

The second movie, where they go back to Okinawa, isn't too bad, but not very good, either.

The others--Garbage.

Oh, and do yourself a favor, STAY FAR AWAY FROM THE REMAKE!

Ralph Macchio FTW!

goragrad22 May 2017 1:38 p.m. PST

Heaven and Earth for the win.

The Admiral is another great choice.

And then Kagemusha and Ran.
