I seem to recall that the Towton bodies averaged about the same height as UK WWI troops. We may have gotten a bit taller recently.

I think there is also some evidence that average height declined during the early industrial revolution due to appalling conditions in the factory towns and the decline in diet.

Kudos Dan! Anyone remember how small the doorways were in Ivan the Terrible. Going by the doors you'd think the Russians were Hobbits!
