If it is irrelevant, why does it matter?

Can someone make a nice comedic Monty Python quote, so we can all laugh and move on.

I am really at a loss to understand not only why this thread exists (along with the corresponding one in the British forum) but why the fire has been stoked on what is obviously an unnecessary and very personal issue. I have travelled very extensively and have met some of the best and worst in all countries. I have lived in both the UK and US and they are no exception to that. Both countries also offer wonderful hobby events and games clubs

Unfortunately, the massed deletions, nukings and personal commentary on this thread appear to undermine the credibility of a website and message boards designed for hobby enjoyment. I sincerely hope we can return to talking about toy soldiers, amateur history and the other nonsense that make a enjoy an enjoyable distraction.

That make a what,now?

Hafen von Schlockenberg23 May 2017 6:09 a.m. PST

Not that I disagree with you.

I expressed my feelings as soon as this thread appeared; they were deleted and dismissed as a "nuisance",as were those of many other members.

I am really at a loss to understand not only why this thread exists (along with the corresponding one in the British forum)…

Quite clearly, I wanted to talk about a problem in the hobby community which I had observed.

…but why the fire has been stoked…

Where do you see any 'stoking'? I am at a loss to understand what you perceive.

…on what is obviously an unnecessary and very personal issue. I have travelled very extensively and have met some of the best and worst in all countries. I have lived in both the UK and US and they are no exception to that. Both countries also offer wonderful hobby events and games clubs

How is it a personal issue? If you told me there was a problem with a certain group of gamers in New York (where I live), I would not take it personally. I certainly would not conflate it as somehow being an attack on all New Yorkers.

Unfortunately, the massed deletions, nukings and personal commentary on this thread appear to undermine the credibility of a website and message boards designed for hobby enjoyment.

Rubbish. Forum rules will be obeyed. People do not have the right to violate forum rules just because they feel emotional about something.

I sincerely hope we can return to talking about toy soldiers, amateur history and the other nonsense that make a enjoy an enjoyable distraction.

We never stopped. 99% of TMP still goes on. grin

An interesting and revealing discussion of the giant ants. "they" and "them" are of course indefinite pronouns and differ merely in their case and tense. It is however a perfect tribute to the power of these giant ants and a demonstration as to how widespread it is. When people say "They won't let you do something" or "They have it in for you." or things like "They've rigged the whole system." or "you can't fight city hall, they are of course speaking of those giant ants. It is the embodiment of the sum of all our fears, of dark forces lurking around- with a malevolence and evil that haunts us night and day, and which was epitomized in the movie THEM with the girl waking from a coma and screaming out THEM and naming the nameless evil. Few of us have ever seen these giant ants and those of us not armed to the teeth rarely live if they have. The question remains though that it might be an indication of their power, control, and abiliti4es that they only prey upon people who are NOT well armed. They know after all who has guns or weapons and who does not! (See, I'm doing it myself already!)

So are there snotty Brits and arrogant Americans? Of course their are, they are everywhere. You may not have ever met one face to face but you KNOW, in your mind of minds they are there, lurking, waiting to strike when you least expect it, when you let your guard down in a minute. Besides how to you know they weren't being nice to you just to lure you into trusting them and then they can strike- stab you in the back. How do you know what they REALLY thought. After all they would not scruple at anything. In fact, how do you know they aren't the same people, in cahoots with each other and just acting like they are mortal enemies like the Jews and the Bolsheviks. In fact, how do you know that they aren't in the old Johnson place a few hundred yards back in the woods. It certainly could hide a whole nest of giant ants.

Wargamers are real jerks sometimes. But then so are people, all of us can at times be perfect idiots. All except of course-- you. You're perfect, you're never wrong, never make a mistake, and your feelings and opinions and sentiments are those of the almighty. You are God's gift to the world and the hobby in particular. You're not like that other guy, or them. You Bleeped text ice cream!

What is interesting is that this thread has had more deleted texts than ones that have gotten through. This means that it is one of the most important topics ever.

Ottoathome31 May 2017 9:10 a.m. PST

One of the great things about war games is you don't have to invite them over to your house. Either the arrogant Americans, the snotty brits, or the giant ants. See, you don't even have to be well armed.

Well put Otto as usual … thumbs up

Ottoathome01 Jun 2017 12:08 p.m. PST

Perhaps it might help to define some things. Not just from Bill but from the body of gamers.

Can anyone give instances of what might be considered "The Snottiness or British Gamers." or "The Arrogance of American Gamers." That is who said what to whom?

Deuce0301 Jun 2017 1:27 p.m. PST

I feel I should point out again that the "arrogance of American gamers" cited was clearly not intended to be taken seriously. It was a sarcastic risposte to the premise of the "British wargamers" thread, which Bill took it upon himself to repost so it could be disproven.

Cacique Caribe01 Jun 2017 3:03 p.m. PST

Deuce,

Be aware though, I think there's a salt shortage. Nothing these days is ever taken with a grain of salt. :)

Deuce I rest my case.
Obviously we all need to go out and buy some more lead as we have too much time on our hands and are not painting and gaming enough.
Too much righteous indignation (Guilty as charged).
My final comment is that there appears to be a lot of bored wargamers out there as I have noticed a rise on several of the sites I visit of a different style of post, the talk is not about the broad church that is wargaming but a handbags at 20 paces foaming at the mouth antagonistic style of vitriol.

(Postscript)
Do I hate americans? No I work with them on a daily basis.

Amen … that seems a staple on at least one "site"/"cesspool" . And the plague ridden of those types bleed over here … deliberately. I can't say how much distain, etc. I have for those types. And the massive volume of ill will I have for them. knife

Again, all on site(s) that deal with supposed adults(?) playing with little toys … literally … playing with toys … snowflake

Von Trinkenessen02 Jun 2017 5:52 a.m. PST

The sites visited were not the one you mention and expect that sort of thing on.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP In the TMP Dawghouse02 Jun 2017 6:21 a.m. PST

It seems the "protective wall" of the net makes bullying, trolling, etc., easier for some. And many are not children but supposed adults.

As I have said before, some say things on the net that they probably wouldn't say to one if they were face to face.

It seems if the media reports are to be believed(?) this sort of thing is frequent on the net. As well as elsewhere.

A report I heard recently, that on a Facebook Page. A troll type "upset" 4 others on the page. So much that they showed up at the troll's home. As they lived in the same city. It didn't turn out well for all involved.

A bit extreme and not a recommended remedy. I can't really totally justify this sort of action. But I can certainly understand it to a point.

You know, I really think your posts aren't helping, Legion.
It wouldn't matter what I post. I like Bill are targeted by some. And that goes on regardless. I know I don't like having stones thrown at me. And sometimes I throw them back. Those 2 I reported to Bill knew what they were doing and knew Bill would lock them out. They wanted to get the last word.

And one was troll from another site. And the other a member here and that other site. They have been throwing stones at me. I threw some back … they talked trash. Got locked out … As another recently before that.

Personal logo Editor in Chief Bill The Editor of TMP Fezian02 Jun 2017 9:47 p.m. PST

Deuce03 will probably be back. I've already locked two of his sock puppets, but he'll get through eventually… He's been reading Frothers and thinks I'm a very bad man!

jclaxton feels that I have no principles and that my posts are garbage, so I've decided he needs to go away to a website where he will be happier.

Where do you see any 'stoking'? I am at a loss to understand what you perceive.

That is rather naive, obtuse even, given the voracity of this thread, the associated deletions and the "casualty list from this thread" as somebody called it. I don't believe you are so ignorant.

Rubbish. Forum rules will be obeyed. People do not have the right to violate forum rules just because they feel emotional about something.

And I would heartily agree, if they were equally apportioned or implemented. That is not the case here. This is clearly more than what Legion4 (quite rightly) says is:
playing with little toys … literally … playing with toys …

Remember that the sandpit is No Man's land and some kids don't share their toys nicely.

Personal logo Editor in Chief Bill The Editor of TMP Fezian13 Jun 2017 4:38 a.m. PST

So that's another locked account,then.

One more to add to the casualty list from this thread.

What can be done? If people are going to troll, they are going to get their accounts locked. Then again, that is probably what they wanted…

You got that right !

Hey is that you TAS ? Your screen name here looks familiar. Your profile says you're an Aussie ! So the clues add up so far ! Email me if so ! thumbs up

Braxton13 Jun 2017 12:05 p.m. PST

Bill is right. This is his forum, not a public one, and things like "free speech" don't and shouldn't apply here. If you can't stick to the line Bill wants you to follow, you should go elsewhere. I didn't see what happened in this thread but it seems a lot of people couldn't and were justifiably banned. That happens.

But Legion 4, I think you should think a bit about "beam in the eye" before you complain too much about other people abusing anonymity. From what I have seen you are all too keen to pick fights and everything you have said in this thread and in Mako11's thread applies to you too. I don't know what anyone else in these discussions said but if they have been deleted and locked and you're still here I dread to think what they were saying… It is easier to talk the talk than to walk the walk… Try practising what you preach!

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP In the TMP Dawghouse13 Jun 2017 2:09 p.m. PST

Well as I have said, many times, if someone throws a stone at me … I'll throw it back and more if need be.

You are fairly new to TMP. Which based on the past, that makes me quite suspect. And I posted my full name in my profile, location etc., I don't think I'm hiding. No I know I'm not hiding.

I was "attacked" by some a couple years back here and elsewhere. As this thread and some others make clear. And as far as I'm concerned it was unwarranted, etc., and not needed on a site about playing with toys.

You weren't here then[or under another name ?]. But I have become very "intolerant" of that sort of thing. And again, if smacked I don't turn the other cheek. If you think that is looking for fight, well I don't see it that way. And if Bill did he'd let me know. I'd think …

And Bill has DH'd me many times and have even been locked out twice. But was allowed back. As some have requested, etc. And it appears some here don't have too big a problem, if any, with me, my comments, etc.

I may be wrong but I don't think you are who you say you are. Based on your profile, location, etc., and your manner of speaking, spelling, etc. Again I may be wrong, but I don't think so. And please you don't have to preach to me regardless …

Braxton13 Jun 2017 3:20 p.m. PST

Dude I'm not the one preaching in this thread :) I only noticed it because you bumped it to the top of the page.

This site is all about toy gaming like you say. So can't you just "be the bigger man" from time to time and let something go? It's ok to walk away from an argument, you don't always have to get the last word.

You keep saying that it's important not to take things too seriously and not to fight and I agree. But you also say that you won't back down from a fight, so it looks like you're telling everyone else to do one thing but admitting you do something else.

Personal logo Editor in Chief Bill The Editor of TMP Fezian13 Jun 2017 3:25 p.m. PST

I've temporarily locked the Braxton account until he can explain some irregularities about his account to me.

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP In the TMP Dawghouse13 Jun 2017 3:48 p.m. PST

I will reply even if you can't. I tried that sort of thing. But after all the vitriol, hatred, distain, etc. thrown my way over the past couple of years. I'm much less "tolerant" as I said. You may not know that being so new here(?) …

You keep saying that it's important not to take things too seriously and not to fight and I agree. But you also say that you won't back down from a fight, so it looks like you're telling everyone else to do one thing but admitting you do something else.
Yes, I do say that and often, but you said
I don't know what anyone else in these discussions said but if they have been deleted and locked and you're still here I dread to think what they were saying…
Yes, you don't know what some have repeatedly said to me[and some others like Bill (!)]. And it didn't take that long for me to get tired of it. You can only walk away so many times. At least that is my take on it.

So some could call me a hypocrite, but if that is all they said to me … I could laugh it off. But it isn't and I can't …

And as Bill suggests often, there is always the stifle button. If some don't like what I have to say, stand for, etc.

Khusrau14 Jun 2017 1:52 a.m. PST

Where does this word 'distain' come from? English is 'disdain'.

I have noticed it being used a lot recently. Is it a common mispronunciation being repeated in written form?

Personal logo Legion 4 Supporting Member of TMP In the TMP Dawghouse14 Jun 2017 5:49 a.m. PST

Hmmm … distain … Spell check does not show it as a misspelling ? But I'm glad to see that you get so many things "useful" from my posts. I'll make note of that …

Webster said :
Definition of distain

transitive verb

1
archaic : stain

2
archaic : dishonor

I guess I mean the later ? Who Knew !?

But if you prefer I'll use "disdain" it in a sentence.

E.g. Khurasu has disdain for Legion 4 … again just for an example …huh?

So I do think Disdain may work better in this case … So thank you for letting me know are better at speaking/reading/understanding the "King's English" … But in the USA we don't have a King. Never did for quite some time now ! huh? I'm just a semi-literate [former] Colonial backwoods[archaic] Rustic … E.g. Which some may have disdain for … See another example used in a sentence …

@ Bill could you please go back and change everywhere I posted distain to disdain as to not upset the more learned here on TMP ! wink [I think this falls under what I have said before, as I would be "attacked" regardless of what I post … ] Oh No ! huh?

dis·dain.

NOUN

1.the feeling that someone or something is unworthy of one's consideration or respect; contempt:

"His upper lip curled in disdain" ·

synonyms: contempt · scorn · scornfulness · contemptuousness ·

VERB

1.consider to be unworthy of one's consideration:
