I wrote a blog about my local model shop recently. It drew some nice comments about how model shops (not wargaming shops) got people into the hobby "back in the day".

It occurred to me that we now have a Record Store Day, which was started to help keep proper record shops still in business. Perhaps we need one of these for model shops?

Great idea I nominate Parabellum in Birmingham.

Sounds like a really good idea – would need industry support though. Record Store Day brings in the crowds through the issuing of large numbers of limited edition releases.

It really works.

Want to know what time the queue started at my local record store ?

Well, it opened early on RSD, at 8AM. The first person in the queue had been there for over 30 hours. And he was ready to spend a lot.

Don't have either in my town any more. There used to be a record shop, a toy shop that sold some models and a good art shop but all are sadly gone.

Just need someone in the industry to organise it then.

BTW Original blog can be found at: link

A great idea, but sadly, so many are gone now, even in major metro areas, I wouldn't know where to start.

It would need that support, I think, to replicate the success of RSD. RSD gets a lot of money through tills, it's bigger than Christmas. It makes April the prime month of the calendar for Record Stores, not December. That is remarkable, and a remarkable success for the organisors of RSD.

Bottom line is they need our money to keep going. Every record bought off Amazon is a nail in the coffin for Record Stores. There's no two ways about it.

Model stores – it's the same thing.

My town no longer has a model store, by the way.

Someone like Hornby or Revell or Tamiya (or all together) would have to promote it.
