"When President Trump arrives in Riyadh this week, he will lay out his vision for a new regional security architecture White House officials call an "Arab NATO," to guide the fight against terrorism and push back against Iran. As a cornerstone of the plan, Trump will also announce one of the largest arms-sales deals in history.

Behind the scenes, the Trump administration and Saudi Arabia have been conducting extensive negotiations, led by White House senior adviser Jared Kushner and Saudi Deputy Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. The discussions began shortly after the presidential election, when Mohammed, known in Washington as "MBS," sent a delegation to meet with Kushner and other Trump officials at Trump Tower.

After years of disillusionment with the Obama administration, the Saudi leadership was eager to do business. "They were willing to make a bet on Trump and on America," a senior White House official said…"

Seems more an "Arab Sunni NATO" to me…

Which Arab Shia nations would you invite?

Iran? not Arab, not on our side
Iraq? maybe they weren't interested
Azerbaijan? not Arab

Last time someone tried a "United Arab Republics", it turned into multiple wars for Israel.

I don't see this working out well this time, either.

What could possibly go wrong?

Iran is Persian not Arabic. Even if the proposed collective defense arrangement aimed at countering Iran is a paper tiger and proves to be unsustainable in the long run due to intra-alliance squabbles, it will provide a mechanism for lucrative arms transfers.

When Nato was formed it was to create a solid unified force to counter the Soviet Union. What exactly is "Arab Nato" goal? Continuing killing thousands upon thousands in Jemen?
Expand the subjecting of women by militarily Conquest? ?

Also Shouldn't the president first learn what the original NATO actually is before trying to make another one?

The ONLY thing all those nations have in common is that they are all majority Muslim …

So, would you create a "Union of Muslim Republics"*? If Turkey joins in and tips the balance toward Sharia Law, that could easily become a Caliphate. At that point do they become our enemies because they are even less secular than when they started? What if they continue to eradicate Christians, Yazidis and all other non-Muslims? Do we continue to look the other way?

We know the Ayatollahs would never accept a Sunni Caliphate, so what if they (Iran and Hezbollah) break away from said Caliphate, and what is left becomes just the "Union of Sunni Republics"? Would we support them in the war that would inevitably come against the Shias?

And, as Lion said, what if they should decide that Israel has to go? What then?

* What if the non-Muslim nations around the Balkans decide that, to counter the Caliphate, they must form a "Union of Christian Republics"? Would we snub them for not being secular, and yet still continue to support the UMR? That would be some incredibly slippery slope! (But it would sure make for some interesting games!)

So What Wrong with "Arab NATO"?

"President Trump will reportedly unveil plans for an "Arab NATO" during his upcoming visit to Saudi Arabia this weekend. While possessing an innate appeal to many, Trump's security team will need to develop answers to some basic questions about the role and functions of this organization and should carefully weigh the potential downside risks associated with this proposal.
An announcement to create an "Arab NATO" would represent the culmination of a project that the Trump administration has been pursuing since coming to office in January 2017. Initial plans apparently envision an alliance centered around traditional U.S. allies including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Jordan, and Egypt, although others could presumably join. The United States itself would not be an official member of the pact but would contribute substantial military, intelligence, and diplomatic support to the alliance. It would not directly involve Israel…"
