I had a go at re-theming a scenario published in Miniature Wargames 15 for the Storming of the Schellenberg Heights from the War of the Spanish Succession into one suitable for the Napoleonic Wars – please see here: link
It worked very well, thankfully – a very interesting tactical situation. |

John, Wow, that was a hell of a fight! I thought there was no way in hell the Allies would be able to re-form and take the hill, and even when they had it looked like they were stalling out. Very cool. I have Polemos around here somewhere; how do you get the bidding stuff to work solo? V/R, Jack |

Thanks Jack, the scenario worked well. Because there is no attrition on the individual unit level (there is disorganization, but that is temporary) unless the whole unit routs, you generally need to attack to really finish off an enemy – which I declined to do with the Franco-Bavarians, thinking that a charge down the hill against a powerful enemy looking slightly shaken had too many shades of Hastings! This chimed in quite well with history, where the Allies were able to reform a couple of times to attack. The single most important move I didn't really highlight in the AAR, but it was when I moved a single base of cavalry slightly up the hill to support some Bavarians against the Austrian grenadiers. This worked fine, but then the Allies were able to mount a proper combined arms attack on the lower slope which the Franco-Bavarians couldn't plug in time… To get Polemos to work solo, I basically randomize the Tempo bid. This works just fine and causes interesting problems for the generals on both sides! Obivously it is hard to surprise yourself as a solo player, but what it does do is put a lot of stress on risk-reward calculations – you might get to do a lot for two turns in succession, or you might get to achieve very little whilst the other side does lots for two turns in succession. Yeah, the scenario was fantastic, definitely worked for you. I'm a bit ambivalent about the lack of attrition. And I enjoyed your post on solo gaming, thanks! V/R, Jack |
