Do you find any particular battles of WW1 to be the most interesting? If so, why? I appreciate any answers. I'm asking this because I recently got interested in WW1 after watching the American Experience documentary on the subject. I'm trying to choose one battle of the war to study and read about, yet I'm at a loss for which one. Currently ones I am thinking about the most would be Somme, Argonne, and Belleau Wood. |

Ctesiphon. A near run thing that if it had succeeded would have capped one of the most audacious advances in history. As it turned out it led to the disaster at Kut. |

I'd pick Amiens and the hundred days. Represents the culmination of 4 years of bitterly learned experience. |

Belleau Wood is a good example of a relatively self-contained series of battles that you can play out comfortably on a standard table. I have played this one a few times with Great War Spearhead (GWSH). One of the examples was written up here: link Meuse-Argonne was a much bigger and more complex affair. I wouldn't start out with this, at least not with something like GWSH where a stand is equivalent to an infantry company. You can focus on a specific and more limited geographic sector but there are more weapons systems to consider, which is why it is better to start with Belleau Wood and then work up to Meuse-Argonne. The full extent of the Somme is not easily doable. Here is what we put up for the opening day of the campaign, focusing on the battle north of the river itself: link As with Meuse-Argonne, you can focus on a more limited aspect of the Somme. Here is Pushing Tin's write-up and photos for Flers: link and: link Robert |

I will go with the Marne in 1914 and Tannenberg. The early war stuff is my preference. I also like the naval battles on Lake Tanganyika (I know I butchered that spelling). |

Vimy Ridge. It took the Canadian corp almost 3 months of planning to take a 7 klm long ridge that hadn't been done by the French and British. Extensive planning included digging extentive tunnels to the front line to sneak troops up to the launch point. Detailed artillery support and creaping barrages, using range finding for counter battery fire, giving objective maps to every soldier involved, and defining clear objectives. 3/4 of all objectives were reached within the first 4 1/2 hours of battle, the final 1/4 of objectives reached 3 days later. |
