Can someone recommend a good shapeways shop (or 2) for 1/1800 ww2 ships? I've seen several stores but its hard to tell the quality of the ships just from the computer image. Also, what material do you recommend? White strong flexible, frosted ultra detail, etc? |

link Tiny Thingamajigs has the best 1/1800 through 1/4800 ships I've seen at Shapeways. His shop shows 243 1/1800 ships. I've always liked FUD for a material. |

I've got a lot of 1/2400 scale ships (back when they were cheap) from Masters of Military, COB, Tiny Thingamajigs, Direwolf's Depot, Snafu, and Objects May Appear… Mostly FUD. I even got the Coral sea Jap Ships set (Nice!). I really liked them. Detail is good, shape is accurate. However, my friend is a lot pickier: he doesn't like the lines on some of the surfaces (part of the build process. Some horizontal surfaces aren't perfectly smooth), and he thinks that the plastic is too fragile. I haven't had a problem, although some 1/2400 aircraft have broken when removed from 'sprue'. On some fragile looking parts, I put thin super glue to strengthen it. Overall: acceptable. |

Is the difference between strong/white/flexible and frosted ultra detail worth the extra cost? For smaller ships it's no big deal but it can double or triple the price of a $15 USD carrier or battleship. |

The white stuff is gritty. It absorbs paint, looks like the ship is made out of sand paper and the little bits look 'puffy'. For 2400 I'd pay the extra, or even better look at some of the lead models available these days, the price is better. Shapeways is good for the exotic stuff you just can't find anywhere else. |
