Hi All, I just finished Dan Carlin's podcast on the cold war and the bomb. Can anyone offer some good general histories of the period (starting at the end of WW2) that include the development of the geo-political strategies and the technological developments of weaponry? SAC, subs, missiles etc.

No, but there's some good "what-if" fiction to come from the 80's. Team Yankee link Red Storm Rising link and Red Army link were all fun reads.

John Lewis Gaddis' The Cold War: A New History is excellent.

I may sound strange, but Force on Force's Cold War Gone Hot is a great source book on organization, sample games, and uniforms.

What about the BBC series (24 episodes) on Youtube, The Cold War:

Isby's weapons and tactics of the red army is a must once you get to the nitty gritty

Did he do the NATO book too, or did someone else do that?

Not sure about that, if he did, I'll have to grab it ASAP.

The book "Armies of NATO's Central Front" was co-authored by David Isby and Charles Kamps Jr. and is a must have for the Cold War gamer despite some errors which have emerged as NATO member states declassified or otherwise released certain information. It is an excellent reference source but I imagine it is quite expensive these days.

Cheers and good gaming.

As well as the BBC series that irishserb mentioned, there is a book that accompanied the series, written by Jeremy Isaacs & Taylor Downing.
