Any decent book that covers multiple OOB, at least for the major powers, and how they changed through the war? The perfect book would cover up to division level and down to platoons or even below, but that may be too much. Ideally would also cover the exact number of machine guns and number/calibre of guns authorized at that time. Anything like this out there? Could be historical or a gaming book.

I assume you mean TOE (how units are organised) not OOB (units present in a specific action/campaign)? If this relates to WWI the nearest I think you might get as a sngle volume is the WWI Sourcebook (Haythornthwaite) Even this will only have components at various times. For platoon scale the old GDW Over the Top and for company scale Great War Spearhead rules may be useful. Bank on a lot of changes, differences between different Waves/reserve units etc. I suspect people may be able to help with specific points in time e.g. August 1914, British Western Front July 1916 and March 1918 because secondary works tend to focus on key dates. The WW1 Data Book by Ellis has both TO&E and extensive OOB for all combatants. It is pretty boring to read! But a useful reference. |
