I'm looking for a set of WW1 skirmish rules that would be good for early war western OR eastern front.
I have narrowed my choices to:

Through the Mud and The Blood
Contemptible Little Armies
Price of Glory

For those of you who have played more than one of these rules, could you give a comparison between them? And of course, which one you liked best and WHY.

Thanks In advance !

I've played the first two and liked both a lot.
Mud&Blood feels more "hardcore", like a man to man simulation, CLA is a bit more abstracted, it also played a touch quicker.

Both are well recommended.
It's worth nothing that "Mud" is /really/ focused on late war trench fighting. You can do other stuff, but its more laser focused, CLA is a bit more open to early war and the other fronts at the cost of being a little bit less detailed.

As Weasel hints, CLA isn't a skirmish game per se. Despite Mr Peers' claim that it will play as low as platoon level, many of its features (such as the detailed treatment of artillery bombardments) place it higher up the representational ladder, and it doesn't have the granularity necessary for a satisfying skirmish game. Most users play battalion/brigade/division level games with it.

For what you're seeking you should look to Chris Peers' WW1 true skirmish rule set, 'To the Last Man', based on his 'At Close Quarters' modern skirmish game engine.

Yeah, it can "feel" a bit like a skirmish but as Henry says, I think you're really supposed to pretend its a battalion or regiment.

I totally missed the "skirmish" part of OPs question.

Ok I will check "To the Last Man" out.

I'm planning on using the Skirmish Campaigns: Rommel's Route to Verdun book as our scenario guide. It's all in 1914

I own but have never played CLA. I think the rules would work quite well and would appeal to a wider audience.

The best but most often overlooked rules for this period are called Triumph and Tragedy. they are card driven but I tend to change the activation system a little for playing them solo. They have a lot of the detail of TMB but play much faster.
